So currently my LCR has a remap, Badger 5 V3 TIP, S2000 filter and a Forge 007p all typical, "what everybody does" mods. She is making 265bhp. My mapper (Big Fish Tuning) will give it a free tweak if I ever decide on an uprated intercooler and an exhaust system. That time is now...

My trusted friend and mechanic says that regarding the intercooler, bigger is not always better. Im not chasing mega power. Im after around 280-300bhp and after these two modifications, im done So he says a small FMIC will be better as it will be less laggy due to the smaller volume (makes sense to my limited mechanical mind). I think I have settled for the TXAutosport cooler and kit. Good choice? His original idea was to get an OEM cooler off a diesel from a scrappy and custom fit it. I wonder if people have done this?

Regarding the exhaust I have decided on a Powerflow system from the turbo back including a sports cat. Again the size (diameter) is to be decided. Ive looked on past threads and everybody says 3" is the way to go. Is it really overkill though? The fella at Powerflow thinks that it is for the target of power I am looking for. I don't like excessive noise either so maybe 2.5" is the best?
I am wondering though is there a compromise to have a 3" downpipe into the cat, then 2.5" to the tail?

Thanks in advance :D

i think most people go 2.5" unless they are going for big numbers, ive went for the welly cooler on my normal cupra, there is definately a little extra lag before it spools but its managable.

ill be heading down to big fish soon aswell as i need my map tweaked for stage 2

Nice one Azza. I will look into the welly cooler. Ive seen it come up a few times on searches.

Yeah Jon at Big Fish is a top bloke. The difference after his mapping session was awesome. Raised the rev limiter to 7250rpm which was unexpected!

the welly cooler is a big old beasty, but gives scope to do just about anything you want as itll flow for a decent range of turbo's

he was a good bloke with me, mapped my car and also mapped out the sai system so i didnt get any codes for incorrect flow

Welly cooler has always had positive feedback with no real lag issue.
Yes you can go too big but keep the pipework oem size with this cooler and you will be fine.
If you get anything too small however you wont get any gain from it so essentially pointless.
Exhaust wise. Not sure why you would even consider 2.5 if wanting to max out your k04.
Do you have a downpipe?

Thanks for the feed back.
Cupra-db, I'm getting powerflow to do me a down pipe but I might get this done as 3" as of way of compromise. I guess a much as I want the maximum performance gain, i don't want it much lost than stock.

Thanks for posting the pic up of the intercooler. How much power are you running then? If it's been mapped, did it help create more power by allowing the turbo to work harder?

Go for a 3" turboback but just have 2 free flowing silencers added. If you are having the exhaust made up, look for a nice stainless steel turbo/downpipe flange to purchase first, otherwise they will likely cut the flange off your old one and use that. Not sure if this is the right one for yours, but i bought their TFSI flange for when i had my exhaust made, excellent quality: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-AUDI-G...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c42d22dcc

Wellycooler is also a good choice, tried, tested and cheap

dont listen to your powerflow mans advise re downpipe
3" is minimum size, larger would in fact help

Small but a nice position for cold air :)

Thanks for your input badger. I might see what my options are on a 3" system but with some mahoosive silencers on it. Its the same price either way (£600 dp/sports cat/system if anyone was curious)

On a side note badger, the V3 TIP you sell is great piece of kit. Noticed a big difference when I just changed that on its own. Cheers!

Cheers Dan. although I cant imagine powerflow taking a shortcut and using a mild steel oem flange onto a stainless DP?

Do you really think they keep a flange in stock for every variant of turbo on every car, or have such sophisticated kit that they can make one there and then? I highly doubt it.

If in doubt, ask them. I did and bought my own. Also make sure you specify exactly what you want, as the likes of Powerflow, Longlife etc typically use the smallest diameter they can et away with.

3" downpipe I said for confirmation
Most aftermarket systems for these are 2.75" there after, with a couple of 3" TB systems available.. cobra one of them

Paint it black! Looks cooler and you get better heat transfer, avid follower of mighty cars mods on youtube and they mythbusted it and to everyone's suprise there was a 71 degrees C difference in air temp just by painting it black! Colder air = more oxygen = more boost! ;)

Im sure it was... but then again that was like three weeks ago and ive slept since then haha :D hey if its only when its still then lets call it... launch control aid haha!
