Hi, been a while since i was last on the forum, but need some quick advice.

I have recently been having some running problems lumpy performance, sluggish acceleration, low mpg ect...

I had a garage look at it and he replaced the Coolant engine sensor (flashed up on his computer as a fault)and for 2 days the car was back to normal, it ran smoother and power seemed back, but now it is slowly going back to sluggish mode.

Also the check engine light popped up the other day (then went out and has never been back since), my temp guage is also showing a problem, never reaches 90c just hovers around 60c and maybe rises slowly to 70c if i give it some gas.

I have replaced the thermostat last year also the water pump, (so that seems unlikely), what else should i be looking at, it must be coolant area related, due to the difference when changing the sensor.

I have heard of another sensor on the thermostat housing, could this be it, i always thought that was the same as coolant engine sensor.

hope you can help me, thanks.

Thermostat is f*cked, that will need to be replaced again. And yes they can fail that quickly

Thanks, for the sake of a few quid i will pop a new one in, is one as good as another when it comes to Thermostats, or do some last longer?

i would just get a genuine unit mate or i dont know what other people think of them but i have a neuspeed low temp one i also fitted the neuspeed low temp fan switch and the temp gauge never misses a beat now. got them from awesome bout £30n including p&p.

Neuspeed are £15 on eBay try there. I would if I did mine again

Just been looking on Awesome site, they are £15 with free delivery, Ebay has a shipping charge.

Will i need the fan switch or can i get away without.

£30 was for the pair

not essential just fans wont kick in till the standard temp on idle. dont forget if you get the fan switch you will need the adaptor which awesome sell £12 i believe easy is to do as long as you have cutters and crimp tool.

Was plugged into i assume a vagcom system, was not at the dealers.

The garage cleared the codes after fitting the sensor.

As long as fans work okay without the newer switch i will just buy the thermostat for now and see if that sorts the problems out first.

Thanks for the replies.

I decided might be best if i stick to the Genuine VAG thermostat for now, maybe upgrade next time if i ever remap or mod my car any, hopefully it will sort out the original problem more importantly, so got one on order from Sere and will give it a try when it arrives.

Will no doubt be back with how it works out.

I bought my replacement thermostat from David @ Sere motors. He's a seat dealer, who has his own section on here. I'd recommened buying the stat from him if you're going the genuine route, best prices usually

Yes that where i am getting it from, cheaper than my local dealers and delivered too, had parts from them before, outstanding service and prices.

Will be fitting the new thermostat tomorrow, couple of questions for you

Can i fit the thermostat without completely draining coolant (i only bought 1 bottle of g12++ to top up with)
Also will i need to bleed anything, i know about squeezing the pipes, will this be enough.

One other thing, i keep hearing about the coolant temp sender could give erratic temp gauge readings, i have had the coolant sensor changed, where is the coolant temp sender located and is it exactly the same as the coolant sensor in shape (green one).

Thanks.
