I’m gutted! On holiday I was going down a very steep single lane hill to be met by a number of cars coming up. I was the one needing to move and reverse back up. It was so steep and hard to hold clutch I smoked my clutch. There was literally black smoke coming out and the clutch went soft for a few minutes once I was able to set off again. Stench lasted days. After two weeks it still smells after driving albeit much less. I think in second gear it’s slipping very slightly although not too obvious yet. Car only done 16000 miles but I’m guessing I’ve ruined the clutch. I’ll wait until slipping more problematic but how much will a replacement fitted be so I can save up

If you are planning to do any form of remapping etc might be an idea to get an uprated clutch such as a sachs, not sure on the cost of the factory one. Just a thought.

It will be fine don’t worry about it.

Few normal miles and it will be back to how it was just take it easy for a bit

If there is a problem you'll notice it more when trying to accelerate hard in a higher gear from low/mid revs I think. If you do need to replace the clutch then remember to check the flywheel at the same time. A lot of slipping could have created blueish hotpots and changed the properties making it much harder. Normally recommended to replace at same time considering the labour costs to access the area.

I just had a clutch and flywheel replacement for my Cupra as I was going for Stage 1 APR high torque map. I got a Helix 6 paddle Sintered clutch and Sachs flywheel for approx £1500 fitted.

Thanks for the replies. It may be I’m noticing normal behaviour as it seems okay in high gear acceleration so probably being over sensitive. Fingers crossed as £1500 will need saving for.

That’s £1500 for a performance one pal but I’d imagine SEAT standard part and their labour would be around that anyway. You would be better off getting a performance one and getting it fitted by a VAG specialist or a well trusted local garage. Seat labour charges are where the money goes to - they quoted me £280 for a CV boot which is a £30 maximum part and pretty simple job to do.

Test it. 4th gear, handbrake on, slowly engage the clutch and see if it stalls.

Thanks for the advice. I did this and it didn’t stall and separately I was also able to set off in 4th from standstill. Hopefully this means I’m okay and that the slight burn whiff will fade out. Fingers crossed

It didn't stall? It should have, was it slipping? The smell is burnt material in the bellhousing. It'll fade.

Ah, no, stupidly I realise I had my foot on the accelerator which is why it didn’t stall. Doing it as you describe the car did stall and wasn’t slipping. Thanks for the explanation about the housing too. I’m feeling much more reassured now.

OK, I think I wasn't specific enough. You have to apply the handbrake, select 4th or 5th, give it a bit of throttle as in a hill start, then slowly engage the clutch holding the revs up. The engine should stall, if it doesn't the clutch is slipping.

PS. Do it where the car won't move forward into something if the handbrake doesn't hold it.

I’ve tried it this morning and it stalled :)

just stick it in highest gear at lowest revs like 40mph in 6th (max torque) and sink the pedal and you will soon know if it slips or not

Done this too and all good. It looks like it’s okay and the smell should wear off .

Thanks all for the help. It much appreciated and such a great forum
