Just ordered some of these from an autosock web vendor (although they're very low on stock and waiting on a lorry load delayed by the weather - oh the irony). I'd looked at them before but never bothered as my last car (smart Roadster) was a absolute pig in the snow anyway.

What convinced me was watching an Audi estate with some on cruise past me yesterday as I was struggling to follow even the gentlest of bends.
Cost was about £60 including courier. I checked on eBay first but noticed that the prices are getting very inflated due to the weather. Still less than the cost of repairing a dinged alloy (I've already had to have one repaired).

I'll be working from home tomorrow - there's a warning on the news about only travelling if it's essential, and I can do as much (software development) at home as I can at work. We've got 5 inches of snow on the ground with more promised tonight and a day of freezing fog and -7 C forecast for tomorrow.

Iv a pair on mine for the last 2 days. I was taking all the back roads on purpose to test them. There brilliant in 2 to 3 inches of snow but unfortunitly there is patches of tarmac and they are now shredded.
Gonna have to invest in some snow tires im afraid :(

Yeh from the reviews it seemed they would shred on cleared / gritted roads.
For £60 they're my 'get me home' emergency backup. In bad weather I'll just keep working from home :D

Drove into a carpark on friday where you have to climb a hill first. Not a hope had I of getting up. I dunno if its the tires iv on(Falcon FQ458) or if the mk2 Leon is just rubbish in snow, but I went in yesterday for the laugh and I climbed it no problem with the socks on!!!
It would actually be better if they didnt bother clearing the roads and everyone put these puppies on..

I recommend anyone using snow socks or chains to get in touch with their insurance company before buying or fitting them. I first heard of snow socks on another thread and someone there suggested that fitting traction aids might be seen by insurance companies as a modification. Since then I've been in touch with Churchill and they do need to be informed if using socks or chains, although there is no charge for amending policies to cover this.

And while we're on the subject of greasy insurance companies...

yeah got protected no claims but still hurts the pride

...and how much do you think that NCD protection is worth?

Three years ago my pride-and-joy mk2 Golf 16v was hit by an artic on the M6 near Carlisle. The driver left the scene as I went to get his reg details and so I had to make a claim that couldn't be recovered from a 3rd party. I was initially offered £300 payout which after several exchanges eventually went up to £1750.

The sting came at renewal time when my insurance shot up from £350 to £980. I contacted my insurers to confirm that I had protected NCD and to ask what was going on with my premium, as my renewal notice said I had 7 years NCD but the quoted figure was equal to me having lost my NCD. The brokers said it was up to the insurance company and they could load the premium as they saw fit, regardless of NCD and whether it was protected or not. So, I had 7 years NCD on paper but my policy went up anyway as if I was starting afresh. Bunch of crooks...

One thing iv learned, weather its snow socks or winter tires your gettin, get them for all wheels and not just the front. Was driving home there a while ago and the back just snapped without warning. Nearly ended up in a field but I just about managed to save it...

I was wondering about this. It's all well and good having extra grip on the driven wheels but I was thinking surely the rears need grip too to stop the back end stepping out. You've answered my question mate ;)

That's cause your just booting it mate, slow and gently is the way to drive in these weather conditions, not like a boy racer

Slow and gentle is definitely the only way but booting it won't make the back end snap out, it's the massive difference in grip between front and back that's the problem. Mind you, these things sounded like the next best thing but I'm not so sure now. If you were to get the most out of them you would be fitting them and taking them off every few minutes where I live. There's a lot of snow and ice but also plenty of sock-shredding bare tarmac around here, and getting proper tyres seems like the way to go...

I was in 3rd gear doin less than 30kph. It just went without warning. I didnt brake or make any sudden movements. Just traveling in a straight line and next thing I was sideways...
Sure knocked a hop out of me. No damage done thankfully though.
