sqweak on startup

when my engine is left to go cold like over night or for an hour or so, when i next start it i get a squeaking noise sounds like the fan belt but i thought if it was loose it would do it all the time. if i leave the engine run or drive for a few mins it stops. also it doesnt do it if i rev the engine. only when its left to tick over

sounds like the alternator belt to me.. just tighten it a little

yeah i noticed it in the rain i think thats when the problem started.
is there a little tensioner?

what engine you got? there is normaly a little cogged wheel for tightening them up

1.9d i believe the altenator should be similar
i think its a reletivley new belt as the altenator is new and the belt looks new ive only had the car a month

try putting a little talc powder on the belt to see if it helps give grip. first time i heard this i laughed but works like lol

either needs tightening up, or some engines are self tensioning, check the belt isnt cracked or worn.

if its self tensioning possibly new belt as stretched.

talcum powder lol, sounds plausible however im more concerned at any bloke on here having it to hand!

i used WD40 once to stop it and it that worked! will try talcum powder next time tho

i will try wd40 in the morning.. just didnt want to bugger it up as with drying out or anything.

im gunna clean my engine today so il have a look and try wd40 or talc it ( il raid me ma or sisters make up and that) the belt looks new as its a new alternator so maybes its loosened a bit stereched or something

lol its silly but ts a powder that dries up the belt so if u think its that it should work fine

i cleaned my engine yesterday and felt the altenator belt was ever so slighty loose. i belive i need to tention it but i wasnt totally sure how. it looks like a new belt so its not worn out

I have got a 1.9D, same squeal from the fan belt on cold start up. Those engines are known to do it, new belt will help but it can happen to a new belt too. It doesnt bother me too much as by time im a half mile down the road it stops. Ive heard its due to worn pulleys, but they are expensive to replace.
Tighting it should reduce the noise, also, next time you replace it, get a genuine Seat one instead of an autofactors one. Never tried it on my car, but we had a '91 Cavalier that squealed alot, not just on startup, it could happen on gear change, but then once we got a genuine GM fan belt, and it lasted ages before it started to squeal.
So it might be worth investing a few pound extra to see if that helps, i know i will the next time i change it.
The 1Y engine is loud enough without a belt slipping making it worse!!!

The belts are easy to change on a 1.9d engine, takes an hour to do, tensioning is done by you, put a bar behind the alternator and pull it away from engine, to tighten the belt while a mate tightens the bolt, mine used to squeel like a pig, changed the belts and its all good now,

another good thing to put on the belt to stop it squeeling is cv grease, works for a long time compared to wd40
