Does anyone know if it possible to clean and re-grease a solanoid out of the starter motor on a mk1 Leon S? Or am I looking at a new starter motor?

You can take the starter motor apart and access the pre-engaging lever, but the solenoid itself and the high-current contacts are sealed.

What makes you think it needs to be cleaned and greased? What symptoms are you experiencing?

I had an intermittent problem with my starter some time ago which turned out to be the electrical contact between the strap from the solenoid to the starter and the starter motor terminal. All described in this thread.

Take the starter off, clean it up and regrease and it'll be fine, I presume you're getting the little whirring noise after starting the car?

Anyway it's really easy to do, just two big long bolts from the back and you get access to the gearing that needs greased up. Also use something to clean all the clutch dust off the cog and face that sits in the bell housing.
