Starting Issues (as always)

Hi guys, my friend has a mk1 Leon and recently started playing up, I've applied all the knowledge I can what with also being a mk1 owner who has had many many issues, their car currently isn't starting (standard immobilizer issue I reckon) but they get a warning on the LCD screen when they turn the ignition on that reads "Def". I've never come across this fault or warning can anyone help me?

When switching in do you hear fuel pump priming?

From the owners manual

"Fault display If there is a fault in the instrument panel, the letters DEF will appear in the trip recorder display. Have the fault repaired immediately, as far as is possible".

I don't know mate it was a friend's car that has the issue, he called me for my help, but obvs didn't know what the DEF warning was.
