You often find wheels at the back of stealerships that come off Alteas and basic Leons that get optional wheels fitted and most of the time they are free.
I have 4 x 16 or 17" steels that fit the back of my Cupra of one of these. Wont go on the front due to brake size however.

I would think 16's are ok based on the fact that FR comes with 312mm brakes, same size as the MK1 LC has, and they came with 16's. Not 100% sure though. I also seem to recall someone on here with a black FR diesel has steel 16's with winter tyres - maybe Haddock?
Yes I've fitted 16's over FR Brakes, they just go over the callipers leaving approx a 5mm gap.
I managed to find some cheap alloys though, they cost about £100:

They do make a big difference. I had some Vredestein Wintrac xtremes fitted yesterday and they are so much better than the GY F1 assymetrics that I had on.

Winter tyres work really well in snow but on ice they are about as useful as standard summer tyres (marginally better imo though).
In the snow they are excellent and currently using Dunlop Wintersports on both the Seat and the Pug. Decided to stick with the same alloys and just got another set off ebay (£160 for the Seat and £80 for the Pug).
Went for the Dunlops after loads of research (ADAC tests (Germany) and tirerack survey (US)).
The Vredesteins are pretty good too and you can get these from Camskill. My tyres are more expensive generally but have a better range.

do you have to alter anything on the ecu when using smaller tyres? i have the 18inch wheels, so say if i went for some 16 inches would i need to alter settings to take into account the smaller wheels?
Just taken the plunge and ordered a set of Good Year Ultragrip 7+'s with steel wheels for the A3 - getting fed up with the lack of grip from the GSD3's in cold weather - these are M+S marked too which is a bonus for driving on the continent where M+S tyres are mandatory.
I'm going to leave the Leon for now as I may not be keeping it for long - I can always take the train if it gets bad, but the A3 does regular round trips from South Wales to Bristol and Bath.
The tyres have won a host of awards in Germany, so hopefully they'll do the job -
