I've noticed a strange noise when turning the steering wheel at low speeds. Hard to tell if it's doing it at normal driving speeds as I can hear the engine more. It's kind of sounds like rubbing two bits of nylon together. Any ideas what it could be the cars a 62 plate fr 1.2 dsg.

Sounds like the whining power steering pump we have on our 13 plate 1.4. I complained to SEAT about it but they were not interested.

I have heard a rumour that Skoda stuck a insulated cover over theirs to quieten the pumps down.

By the way our 59 plate 1.4 didn't have a whining PS pump.

It will be the electric motor. They're quite loud on Ibizas and Minis, it's quite normal though.

The original steering systems of these cars Fabia etc, were made by a different manufacturer maybe these pumps were noisier so needed a "sound blanket" - just be thankful that none of the Polos and Ibizas ever got that system as these "sound blankets" ended up killing the pump assemblies by keeping them soaked in water, not a good idea! I think that even some of the survivors ended up getting that covering removed!

I think that the OP is meaning noises from below the steering wheel and not other far away noises that occur when the wheel is turned - like the Hydra-Electro steering pump - though sorry if I'd wrong!

Edit:- original manufacturer was Koyo and the later one is TRW

No it's more of a whining noise. I think it must just be a noisy pump had a mechanic check everything out and he couldn't see anything wrong with the car so guess I'll just put up with it.

Mine's started making noises as well, mostly hear it whilst stationary/manouvering in car parks. Car is 63 plate still under warranty, think I'll get any change from the stealer??

if it sounds like the noise that an electric motor makes when you stop it from moving when it's trying to move, then I have that sound too, only on full lock steering though. Mine's a 3 week old Ibiza FR DSG.
