Planning an upgrade of the info system and MAJOR clean. Need to replace the storage compartment with the USB version. I am finding it hard to remove. I have flipped up the cover the manual gearstick but can not seem to pull the compartment out. Do I need to have that special tool 3370 to do this task. I have many trim removal tools but none seem to be similar to the 3370 tool. Thanks

Most likely screwed in under the climate control switches . Probably have to remove climate control to access.

Thats just a hunch

@bcroninuk - the procedure for removing the centre console storage tray is outlined in the workshop manuals at the link below. The relevant manual is the ‘General body repairs, interior’ manual - pages 76 & 77; ‘Removing and installing centre console front storage compartment’. The manual does state special tool 3370 is required.

Unfortunately that guide is for FL models and the storage compartment is part of the gear surround.

OP; I've taken mine off many time. Remove the climate controls with trim removal tools, there's multiple tabs around the edges and the storage part just pulls off. I does need a lot of force and will feel like something is going to break.

I did this on my DSG a couple weeks ago.
1st remove the AC panel, it's just tabs. Start from the bottom and go around the edges and it will come out.
Once the AC panel is removed, you just pull the lower compartment towards you. For re-install it was easier to remove the trim around the gear selector and then re-install the new compartment. :)

I thought mine was screwed in, took ages trying to remove them, gave up and just have it a good pull and it came free..

I'd removed the AC unit. Just remember to plug everything back in before testing. I love an airbag error

I just did this for the first time yesterday and as others have said, pull out the climate panel first.

I started with a plastic tool and then got away with a small screwdriver just above the chrome trim to pull out the bottom, same at top and it pulls out easy.

Then with the gear surround pulled back, just grab the back of the storage area and pull so it pops out.

Easy to reassemble.
