Yep exactly what was happening to me before I replaced the unit. If your really keen its only a broken joint on the pcb but depnds how adventurous you want to be. It is much easier to replace with complete new locking mechanism. The unit is sealed with a silicone sealant to stop any water ingress but with doors being shut heavily after a while the solder joints give way.

Think ill just have a punt at replacing the unit. :D

I changed the driver door lock mechanism when it failed to lock. Couple of points I found - make sure you get the exact part number - sounds obvious but the first mechanism I bought had a different number of pins on the electrical connector as there was a change around Nov 2010 so if you have an earlier car and just get a Mk2 Leon mechanism it may not fit - I think it had a "P" at the end of the actual number I needed. It was not changed with the facelift as mine is a facelift, it was changed later.
Don't try to undo the two M8 triple square drive bolts holding the lock with a Torx bit or you will round them off - I know 'cos I did it.
I used these instructions and it's pretty straightforward http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=167381&highlight=door+card

hi bzoow is it a pretty easy job to do as ive just brought a drivers door mechanism due to it not wanting to unlock of the fob anymore. Is the mechanism easy to get to once the door card is off?

It's pretty straightforward if you follow the previous instructions and have the right tools as mentioned. Remember to drop the window lift mechanism after loosening the bolts so it clears the glass (that you have already taped up!). Do what it says about snapping off the plastic retainer piece that hold the lock to the door card.
I had the whole removal/refitting down to less than an hour including lock replacement as I got the wrong part and did it a few times.
I used a set of plastic trim removal tools from Amazon about £6 which made a few steps easier and prevented marks on the panel.
Once the panel is off you need to release the door handle cable, see this link that might also help - http://www.taligentx.com/passat/maintenance/doorlockmechanism/
Basically undo the black blanking plug on the side of the door and partially undo the T20 while pulling the door handle, the handle will bind when it's out far enough and you should be able to take off the trim and remove the lock then release the cable from the handle then undo the two M8 triple square bolts holding the locking mechanism.

sweet thanks for the info, il be doing it on saturday so il let you know how i get on.:coolthumb

sorry guys not been on for a while had lots going of. i brought one ended up being incorrect part (ebay special)! anyway i just sprayed contact cleaner in the connections and it worked fine for about 2 months and now back to working whenever it feels it wants to. Ive left it for now but im sure it will get to a point where i cant cope and just buy an oe and replace it. when i do i shall do a photo guide.
