I have a tapping noise coming from the black box in front of the coolant header tank thats really getting on my wick!?

I also noticed when at low revs and accelerating the engine doesnt hesitate i just get a a 'chugging' sort of noise, its deffo from the engine because soon as u let off it stops! This might be me just being 'anal' is this normal?

Cheers :)

I have something like this like a ticking/tapping noise if you hold the wires near it does it become less noisy? its quite annoying[:@]

Um havent tried that? it sometime goes and sometimes stays for ages? when sat still its all i can hear lol

I darent pull it apart as i dont know what it is, or whats in there lol im in dereham!? :D

That's normal, it's called the carbon canister/charcoal canister (depending on who you ask), there's been a stack of threads about this. It rattles like a skeleton masturbating in a filing cabinet...

Is there no way of rectifying this? lol or do i have to listen to it going at it all the time ? :p

I'd be surprised if you can hear it inside the car with the engine running...? If so then maybe something's not right, I can just about hear it outside the car when it's idling with the bonnet shut, easily enough with the bonnet open but that's about it.

I can hear it inside yeah? its quite a violent noise! if i put my finger on top of it you can feel it knocking?

guys this is nothing to worry about, this is normal, as mentioned, its the carbon canister. i can hear it from my cabin only when stationary at lights or something, it gets faster, blip the throttle and it slows right down. Its fine. :)

Thats okay one less thin to worry about its just a tad annoying lol... any info on my chugging noise? is it just how these engines sound? :D im hopeless i know lol :(

Cheers guys!

no worries. hmmn not to sure about the chugging noise, bu sometimes when i pull away slowly, my car feels like its kinda hesitant, it drops off bost, but once i let off gas, its fine for the rest of the day, may not happen for days after that. its only when i poull away, always below 2k rpm. that sound similar to what's happening to oyu? as i said, i dont hear anything to go with it.

theres no real hesitation... it kinda sounds like a car running on 3 cylinders when you rev it? its not down on power at all ... its probly me just bein anal? i just worry as its done 42k on a 53 plate and hasnt had a belt yet!? i know it needs doing just cant afford it till i get paid in jan :( i worry too much i think just spoils the fun of driving it if your worried its gonna go wrong all the time lol

I certainly don't remember hearing the carbon canister from inside the car, certainly not with the windows shut anyway. Never read of these things failing either, no idea what's in them or how they work but I do know they're noisy. Think that was one of my first ever threads too :)

Lew, what kind of air filter have you got, have you still got the standard airbox or a cone filter? I noticed once I fitted my cone that a bit like you say, at low revs if I floor it it sounds a bit "burbly", a little bit like an Impreza (but no, nothing wrong with my coilpacks before anyone says that). That sort of thing?

EDIT - I'd get that belt done ASAP, at least for peace of mind. As for your noise, sounds like you've got the same thing I do. What about that air filter?

I have the standard air box!? It does sound a bit like a flat 4 on pick up yes :D only inside the cabin tho? u reckon its any thing to be worried about?

ah yeah im the same, once you get used to the car you pick up on the slightest change, smallest noise or bang. i feel like mine is about to break but its really fine. mine's an 04 with 36k, had my belts done at 34k i think. got my water pump changed too, the OEM has a plastic impeller thing that are known to break, as did mine, the new ones are metal and are only about £30. Not sure about your chugging issue fella. I have a few issues that no one has been able to answer, even the dealers, so i just live with them. Depending on how you are with your dealer, or a local garage, have a quiet chat with them and see if you can get the belts done cheaper. i got mine done, with a full service and MOT for £450.

I don't think so, apparently when a coilpack dies these things sound like a Scooby and they idle rough and run like a dog. I think they must sound a little burbly like a boxer motor normally but get more so with the other symptoms if a coilpack goes so you'll know about it if one does die.

If you change the airbox for a cone filter it sounds a good bit louder but yeh, only from inside the cabin I reckon.

Horrible isnt it! I only had her a week, hopefully i will grow out of it lol

Seat quoted me £290 for a belt change, when doing my research on here i found the issue with the OEM pump so will need to go back to them and ask about that! u reckon they will fit a metal impellor pump for me as i take it seat dont make one?

Yeah she runs fine so i think im just being anal! no harm in asking seat to have a look when they do my belt i spose for a bit of re-assurance, shame i have no money lol... december is one expensive month :(

yeah they should be able to do that for you. my pump was replaced by a SEAT dealer though. I imagine they're standard piece of kit.
