Why oh why did Pedro have to fit the cigarette lighter socket right opposite the gearknob!!!!!!????

Finally I got my Road Angel compact, so I go to install it. Everything goes OK, but as it seems I can't drive my car and have the road angel on at the same time. Reason being that If I plug in the power supply for the Road Angel, I cant put the car into 3rd or 5th gear, because the gear knob hits the power supply, nooooooooooooo!!

Is there any other way of connecting up the socket other than hard wiring it???

Cheers

Mig

Hard wiring is easy peasy - just need to find a switched live - something like reversing lights. Otherwise I'm sure you could fit another cigarette lighter socket in a more appropriate place.

Wire it to the switched power on your headunit, something like the electric aerial lead.

Its only 2 wires, one's an earth.

That must be one huge power supply, as I have my one for my phone plugged in all the time and I've never got close to it.

You will want something like this to wire it in so you don't need to butcher the power supply.

I know haw to wire up stuff, so thats not a poblem. The problem is that the road angels power lead also acts as a USB lead. Therefore it has got a USB end one side and a mini USB end bit the other side. And than this USB plugss into the Cig lighter adapter, which than plugs into the ciggy socket. I cant chop the cable either because i need it for updates from the computer. So I'm probably gona have to take the Cig lighter adapter apart, and hard wire that, and also disconnect the LED that is built into it so that its not on all the time once hard wired.

Hope it all makes sence

I had the same problem with an ipod holder that fixes into the cigarette lighter. I kept hitting it when changing into 3rd.

Right pain in the ass.

Good luck with it,

Buy a ciggy lighter socket from Maplins and wire it into your glovebox, then simply plug the RA into there?

Think that thats what I'll do. Now I just need to get to maplins..........which is 20 miles away, noooooooooooooo. But I might come up with an ingenious idea after I've had breakfast, so I'll keep you updated :D

Good luck! :) If you can't get to Maplins, I have a new Maplins ciggy lighter socket here that you can have for postage!

I have to admit I hate the dash being so close to the gearstick, its near impossible to use the ashtray when its in third or fifth!

If I see a later Polo classic in the scrappers, I'm having the dash. They got the MK5 Polo one! :D

Well Its all sorted now. Went to my local Motor shop and bought the ciggy socket for £2.99. Wired that up to the back of my head unit and feeded it down to the drivers glovebox. Than I have feeded the RA USB cable from the middle of the windscreen/dash down to the glove box as well. So all is well.

But I have also decided to change the original gearknob for a different one, and cut the stick down a bit while im at it (shorter throw ;) ). Problem is I dont know how to take the original knob off. And yes, just before you ask, I am just about to do a search on here for gear knob removal :D

I managed to unhook the gearknob sleeve, and the plastic clip that holds the sleeve in place....................but now I'm stuck as I dont know what to undo/praise/twist next.

Czechboy, the original gearknob just twists off! Oh and just release the gaiter from the centre console and remove it all as one, saves wrecking the hole at the top of the gaiter!

Good to see you got it sorted!

Let me know if you get stuck - I'm about 15 mins away today & haven't used brute force on anything for a day or two
