Stupid Question ... Trip Computer

Hey,

I've had my Ibiza about a week, I've travelled to Wales to visit family and left my manual at home.

I was wondering if anyone could give me a brief overview of how the trip computer works. I cannot find how many miles my car has done since new.

Thanks.

You have to stop the car, because when driving it tells you how fast you are going in KM/h. If you stop it should then tell you how many miles your car has done.

it has 2 counters, default is for the current trip which resets every time you stop for more than about 2 hours. Second one is total since new.
To access the second Trip you need to select it with the reset button under the wiper arm. I do not have manual to hand, but i believe its press and hold until it flips over. It will then stay on that one until moved back. Check the Manual, its in there somewhere.

The Second trip is NOT a log since new. It is since you held down the button under the wiper arm for more than 2 seconds (on Trip 2 screen).

yes but the second trip does not reset itslf unless you make it reset, so technically it can be a log from the start, the first one resets itself after 2 hours of no driving

Absolutely right, but it's not technically a record of the entire car history since new, because it may have been reset. I always reset Trip 2 when i fill up the tank, this way i can see how many mpg i'm getting.

I agree with Andy15star. Only the master oddometer displays miles since new, which is also always visable when stationary. My other post was slightly misleading.

i dont know when, but all other vag cars ive used that had a trip computer could only hold so much data..

200 hrs rings a bell... it may be a bit more for new cars as memory is cheaper not than ever..
Usually the handbook indicates how much data it will hold.

Yeh, i never reset mine, then one day it went from something like 4554 back to 0 randomly when i started the car once.

Definately resets itself after a while, i am not sure when though.

Trip comp 2 does reset. It says in the manual can't remember off hand how long it is though. Think it may be 1999 miles.

Think you're right guys, i remember in my Leon Cupra it got up to around 4500 and reset itself, not sure about the Ibiza but at a guess i'd say it would be around the same. Having said that i only ever clock up around 330 miles on Trip 2 before i manually reset it myself, i just use it as a log of mpg from full-fill to full-fill. It tallies in well with my ScanGauge II so i think the readings from both trip computers are accurate enough !
