mate get decent door speakers and a better stereo, i have a 12 inch type r that would smash that in terms of sound quality but u need basics. headunit + door speakers, u need one with hpf and lpf plus hi-volt rca for the amp, standard stereo is very basic it does not have the connections.

one more thing, you say you dont want over the top but trust me its better to have over the top and dialing it down than have somthing poor and wishing you had more.

I don't really want to change the headunit to an aftermarket one. Don't get me wrong I had a very similar one to the one you posted in my previous car and it was excellent. The only headunit I would consider changing to would be the original Seat Satnav unit but that's about £500 so out of the question lol

Can't really be bothered changing door speakers etc I was thinking a decent sub and amp would have been ok. All I am looking for is a bit of extra bass and a clearer sound. Won't the sub and amp on its own be sufficient enough to achieve this?

You'll get more bass but where's the clearer sound gonna come from? That big speaker in your boot that's busy kicking out the extra bass notes?

Be bothered my friend! What's a couple hours to change the door speakers? You'll be glad you done it after. Oh and you'll get clearer sound by changing the head unit alone

I agree with the above I thought the standard speakers were quite decent but as soon as you put the sub on it's pants. New speakers are on the to buy list

It depends on your budget and obviously what you are trying to achieve. Yes, you can add the amp by rigging it up the the standard head unit (vie something like the rear speakers) but you won't get the control and the sound won't be that great.

I agree that a good Seat satnav headunit would be the way to go but as you say, £500 it a lot of money. I personally had a similar quandry when it came to getting a bit of bass because as we all know the standard setup it not very good. I replaced the headunit with the older version of this http://www.bassjunkies.com/stereo/bluetooth-players/jvc-kd-r821bt (with the usual adapters to make it fit and keep the steering wheel controls etc.). I also purchased a JBL bass tube from ebay with 2 x 10 inch subs and built in amp...sounds superb even though I pulled it to bits and made a custom box (scrap wood in the garage with speaker carpet to cover). I also use the existing door speakers and the setup is very good however I do agree that you can replace the door speakers for better sound but what I personally have is good....and it wasn't expensive at a total cost of under £200 all in.

If you want to have a look and are in the Solihull area let me know as I'm happy to help fellow forum members.

ive got the standared head unit runnin a sony xplod 600watt rms amp with a jbl 60th anni 12' sub and jbl gto6508g components and that is plenty lound enough if i play it at max loudness u can hear me from bout 300 meters away pretty clearly i would change a thing for sound in mine i did a sound test wen car was stationary with left window open taking the readng from outside the left window and it peaked at 110db

136 db from the 12 inch type r running 600 w rms in 1ohm from a hifonics amp, big difference 110db to 136 just out side the front door. inside was 139db that with out a standard head unit head unit makes a big difference.

Upgrade your head unit and it will be like getting your first HDtv. You'll never go back

Lol I'm not after max loudness or competing with other people.

Adman quick question, would the amp not make the sound any clearer even with standard headunit and door speakers?

Head unit controls (send signals) the speakers. Amp just strengthens them signals.

I'm no expert, just a little experience from my previous setups. First on the list is always a decent head unit if your going for clarity. If you just want big thumping bass then just fill your boot with the biggest speaker you can afford :)

Only think with the headunit is I want to keep the factory set up. The only Headunit I would change it for is the Seat media system which is too expensive tbh.

And no I'm not really after thumping bass lol just a bit of punchy bass.

I would prob run the sub on the lowest settings anyway.

My personal opinion is save up a bit more and get the head unit. I'm fussing you wanna keep OEM so it doesn't look like some halfords tat plonked in the middle of your dash? I can fully appreciate that! But there are nice unlary looking ones that do a good job.

My theory is treat yourself once and you can take your system with you to your next car :)

Only reason I didn't do that is coz I was going for something different each time. First time had big thumping bass coz I was 17 and thought I was cool :D 2nd I went for clarity. And this time I'm just going for practicality

I don't agree and don't disagree with buying headunit first but there are many ways to work around standard head-unit. Audison bit one, JL cleansweep or alpine processor.
Sure, sound quality will never be like from ODR, F1 or HXD2 but for a lot of people will be more than enough. Problem is that by keeping standard cd player you will have to spend probably more money on additional equipment than on a decent head unit and it will still not be the same sound wise. Only one positive side of standard cd player is fitment in the car.

And yes, amp might give better sound quality even with standard system. Simply because speakers get more power - are controlled better.
Problem is that they will be running overtime all the time if you connect them to amp. Another thing is that not sure how you want to connect an amp to standard head unit which doesn't have RCA's.
If you're thinking about using adaptors high-> low - forget about sound quality.

I would start with standard sound system and sound deaden all doors properly (dynamat, stinger).
Doesn't matter how much your sound system is worth, it will never sound good without deadening.
You will be amazed how much more bass will show up after that.

When you do that, think about adding more components.

If you buy decent front component speakers you will need to run them with an amp.
Not even the most powerful cd player will be able to give enough power to decent comps.
Forget about all the 4x60W written on CD players. If you get 20 watts continuous you will be surprised.
Cheapest solution is to go for a 4 channel amp.
You can connect front speakers on 2 channels and later a sub bridged.
Disconnect rear speakers. Use only front and sub.
