Subwoofer trouble.

Heya guys. Just a quick pester to see if any of you can help me...
I have a FLI active subwoofer, it was installed in my Golf and worked fine for a good few months.
One day it started to go on and off. One minute it would be working fine, the next it stopped. It seemed to be when i went over bumps and potholes so i presumed it was this. After a while though it just became intermittent and would work one second, the next it would go off.

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem or knows a way i could test it. Was going to buy a new wiring kit and wire it up to see if that helps.

I have read that how it is grounded can affect it, it wasn't grounded very securely, was just looped round a bolt loosely.

Any help would be brilliant.
Thanks guys

Adam

You need a good connection from the battery for the power and also a decent earth, they demand a fair whack of power and any bad connections will just give you grief. You can earth it to a bolt as long as it's wrapped round and the bolt/nut is screwed on tight so that it's nice and secure.:)

Yeah, check the remote cable, i seem to remember this happening to me once in my last car, where i had spliced the remote cable into the HU's wiring, it had come loose, just needed resoldering and taping.

I'd just check ALL the wiring is connected secure (connectors to wire and connectors to equipment), no damaged or corroded (Battery live & Fuse) wires.
This will ensure that all is sorted and well. It's very simple to wire a system up so why not check the lot just to be sure?

Ok thank you all. My main problem now is that i don't have the wiring kit in my ibiza, it was in my golf. I might get another kit but i wouldn't know what gauge or size to go for. Anyone help with this? Its 1000w FLI active sub :)

I had exactly the same problem as you, found out mine was the fuse in my amp wasnt in quite right. You have probably already checked it by now but thats what mine was. It was doing my head in bass then no bass over and over...!

Hi, sorry for hijacking the topic. What wire did you'd all tap into to get the remote wire connected? I am currently trying to wire in a sub with a standard hu.

Cheers

just get a new HU, saves so much hassle! and you'll get a better quality sounds at the end of the day!

for the OP, it sounds like your remotre wire, check the connection at the head unit and look for breaks in the cable. another good test is to look for an LED indicator on your amp, wait for the sub to click off and see if the LED turns from green to red, this will let you know if it is a supply/earth fault. if the LED simply goes out then you can be certain it is your remote cable that's the culprit!

I see the OP is in west Yorkshire. If you still haven't got this fixed then I'd recommend going to a place called Leeds Car Audio in cross gates Leeds. They'll sort you out in no time and aren't that dear.
Just difficult to get a slot cos the chap is rather busy but if you ring up first thing on a morning he'll usually be able to get you in around lunchtime.

My 2 pence is remote connection too. Have some music playing and whip HU out and wiggle it around and tape/solder into position that works. Worked for me.

Hope this helps

Aww guys, just went to the car audio store and got them to sort out the wires. Paid a shocking £75 quid. I feel like I've just been robbed.

But hey, the sub is working now and the bass is going strong. Sounds are good from a standard hu

I had the power cable connected and hidden away. All the wires were connected to the amp and sub.

The only problems were the remote wire which was missing a connector to go into the iso plug. The RCA and remote wires had to be hidden and they charged me for that.

I've had different hu's running this setup and there's no difference in sound from the factory hu. Even the guy at the audio shop said I have a good setup.

It's not an expensive setup either. I am running a mutant x 12" sub with a kenwood 1800w class d amp. I got offered a pioneer sub too. Might just wire it into it too later. But for now it's more than enough to play with.
