They do exist and they are "14" spline, at least that was what was on my wife's 2003MY Polo 9N - maybe look again and count the splines, there should be more than 12. I bought mine online as any spline sets I've seen stop at "12".

On second thoughts, I've looked online for "M14 spline" and found some Laser Tools ones and they do indeed have 12 splines (I should have counted teh splines when I went out to the garage a minute ago!). I think that it is the longer one I bought with the 1/2 adaptor fitted to it.

By the way, Laser Tools also do a tool to "spread" the hub at the point where the shocker fits in - saves you cracking the hub - its a two part kit that covers a lot of VAG cars.

its called a torx head bolt car manufacturers fit them to stop amateurs tinkering with cars hoping you won't buy the special socket required to remove them but easily available from any decent tool store

PS wasn't calling you an amateur but assume you are not a professional mechanic just a competent DIYer :)

No its not. Its an M14 spline bit.

Whatever you do, don;t buy Torx bits as they will round it off

Right, after you remove this bolt, you need to "spring" or force the cast hub "foot" open enough to get the shocker out. Its too easy to snap the hub at this point and using a small chisel or big screwdriver just a bit annoying as it slips back out as the taper is either too "quick" or too "slow".

LASER TOOLS STRUT NUT 3396 not too easy to find, but this is what is made for this job, one part fits Fabia/Polo/Ibiza, other part is for TT etc.

If you want to DIY bodge, then usually mole grips can get a good hold of the outside of the bolt to undo / tighten it up.
I did this while using an air gun on the other end so not sure how easy itl be with a normal ratchet taking it off. Was no problem with an air gun
