Tapping sound from Camshaft?

Recently my car has occured a wierd tapping sound which sounds like its coming from inside the engine.

Call me daft but after doing the old stick of wood to the ear trick the tapping is coming from above the exhaust camshaft area. Cannot here it through the wood anywhere else on the engine apart from that particular area of the rocker cover.

Once the car is warm you can barely hear this noise but if im on a hill (more strain on the engine etc) or just getting the bite point with no revs thats when it becomes quite loud, this is when the car is hot or cold.

Now recently i have noticed a crack going accross the top of my manifold (by the bolt closest to the block) and today i can confirm it is definately blowing from the crack.

My main question is can the blow from the crack on the manifold cause this tapping sound??

Im not sure it could but im running out of ideas

I though surely if it was cam related it would just do it all the time.

Sorry for the essay, Hope i make sense

Yer that would be worth a try, ill do that first thing in the morning

It is quite a bad crack

If it is the mani that could explain why its louder above the exhaust cam i suppose

I always have a spare head ;) I would now be looking into chain tensioner and valve followers. Whip the cam cover off and inspect for anything fouling. I know the chain tensioner can start clicking away if it stops tensioning...

Yep thats the next step i think

Maybe its my engine crying out for bigger things lol

If i have to rebuild the engine/take it apart in any way i can garuntee it wont be standard parts going back in lol.

If you can afford it I would do the headwork when it's in bits for the big turbo that you're going to get ;)

Me and PhilW both say the same thing, although for me I just couldn't justify spending the extra money whilst it was off the road.

Maybe sometime next year though :)

Definately, it would be something id only want to do once

Maybe a re-bore for some nice 82.5mm pistons :) lol

Theres a gt30 ibiza for sale on here for 3k which caught my eye, just seems sooo cheap for the listed spec.

I had my eye on that Ibiza too, if someone could be bothered just swap all the running gear over and sell the car back on with your engine ect.. should get £1500+ easily and you have a fully built gt30!

He was having running issues though.. just keep all your original ecu, loom and sensors and get it remapped again after.

Could be done for £2000 all in. (including selling the donar car on after)

Yer exactly what i was thinking of doing

Has a diff and brembos too

I was chatting to him through pm and the price has gone from 4.5k to 3k in a week, could either be an absolute steel and genuine sale or maybe a bad buy.

Tough one, It is nice to have new parts and do it all from scratch.. but for the savings it is a hard call!

Maybe we should all chip in £1000 and share the parts!
