Tdi 150

Originally i wanted the 1.8t cupra FR.

I don't think im going to be able to afford the group 16 insurance.. so i might have to settle with the 150 diesel...

The idea of diesels doesnt really appeal to me and i wont be doing a tremendous amount of miles... do they have any other advantages other than fuel consumption, and cheaper tax?

Whats tuning like on the diesel?

Can you make it sound good?

Does it come with a horribly obvious diesel sound?

Thanks for any help...

By the way, i would be getting the FR one.. because i love that kit so bad...

If the idea of a diesel doesnt appeal to you dont get one you will just regret it. Is the insurance cost THAT much different. I know the tdi is 13 so its only 3 groups lower, it cant be more than 200 quid surely. If you are spending that much on a car surely 200 quid cant be that much of an issue?

Its a diesel and so it does have the diesel noise. Personally i would never buy a petrol FR as i cant see the point. The diesel can be remapped to more than 180 anyway, either get a LCR if you want petrol, or a FR diesel

As i am 18.... yes.. extremely big difference :)
The thing that really annoys me, is i can get a quote on a 1.8t cupra ibiza for about 1300, and yet, for a leon cupra, its 3.5k +

I say test drive and then make your mind up. I test drove the Cupra R and the Cupra TDI 150 and was impressed by both. The diesel does sound a bit crap when cold and isn't as smooth a pick up as the petrol but once chipped the performance in real world isn't too different so I bought the diesel due to milage I do.

If you don't like the idea of a diesel then try it and make your mind up. I wouldn't buy one just because it is cheaper to insure, look at a petrol that you could insure.

The annoying thing is, the 180 is not easily insured for the leon, the golf on the otherhand with the 150 engine is easily insurred =(

Do a little searchy and all will be revealed.... ;)

but the simple bit is...

yes tuning is very possible, 190-200bhp is common on 150PD's... various companys do this... AMD, Revo, Custom Code, Jabba Sport, APR etc... searchy searchy...

Sound good, well i have a CAI on mine and makes a lovely noise on turbo pick up and well it i let off at full boost it gives out a lovely return noise, but this is up to wat floats your boat, some think this isnt the best thing, me, i like it...

Cold mornings can give you a true diesel sound, but most of the time its not to loud... but its never gonna sound like a petrol it always have a diesel rubble to it, but only time people notice is when its started and idles... most of the time it doesnt even sound like one...:D

Same questions on another thread

I think you should speak to some fellow TDI owners and they will give you some good advice or do a 'Searchy'

To name but a few, spaniels_fr and redcupratdi have incredibly quick TDis so you could start by speaking to them!

Would i be right in saying that the 30-50 speed of the diesel, is probably quicker than that of the cupra petrol? Due to the torque?

The diesel has loads more torque than the petrol but that doesnt mean its quicker although i dont really think you can compare a MK3 Ibiza Cupra (petrol) with a MK4 Ibiza FR (petrol) for example (as the interior is heaver in the MK4 amongst other things are different)

You could compare a MK4 Ibiza FR (petrol) with a MK4 Ibiza FR TDi (diesel) or a MK4 Ibiza CUPRA (petrol) with a MK4 Ibiza CUPRA TDi (diesel) before you make your choice, couldnt you?

I dont know as much about the Leons im afraid

Ive read your other threads and thought I would just add my 2p.

Ive got a Cupra diesel and would recommend it. It does sound like a diesel yes but as has been said only really noticable on idling and start up. Havnt had the money to do anything but as it is it shifts with little effort and doesnt have a drink problem.

Im in the last couple of weeks of university and have had my Cupra four months now but couldnt have had it earlier on as it just costs too much. I had to wait a couple of months before getting it as well as insurance wouldnt touch me without two years no claims so in that respect you have been lucky getting a quote. Wouldnt pay the sort of money they are suggesting though.

I went from a Skoda Favorit, then a Leon 110 TDi and now the Cupra. (just to show my progression) (Both previous cars still alive and kicking by the way [B)]

Also in my experience having a nice car at university can be a pain. Fortunately I have lived off campus in my last two years and have had a drive but mates have had their cars keyed etc. Some students dont like other students with a bit of wonga. It doesnt matter that you have worked for it, its just how it is. Although to be honest that lack of respect is everywehere you go nowadays.
