thanks guys, im gonna give the box a go as im getting rid next nov. 1M cupra next, proper money to be spent then haha

also: i called into a place that does remaps, urban racing, and they told me something interesting. They told me that a lot of 'remappers' use preset codes that are 'locked' to your ecu. They said that then if ever anything goes wrong you cant plug into diagnostics and reset fault codes.

He mentioned that Revo did it? And that they were in court in america over something to do with that matter? Is ANY of this true? o_O

got my leon remapped by them for 750 quid and it went tits up,maybe a one off case but id stick to a recommended tried and tested route.im not saying they arent good at what they do but just dont get a remap there,go to awesome gti for anything vag related.

as for tuning boxes ive got one on my astra and it goes like hell, lots of smoke tho and a bit lumpy, throws the mpg readings out on the trip computer aswell,i paid 240 for mine from dtuk.however my astra is under warranty for 2 years so thats why i avoided the remap.

ive got one anyway, ( a box) but i dont know where it plugs in... any pictures of any installed?

remove engine cover and look down the right hand side of the engine, its a round connector, can be akward to remove as there is a little clip on it (may need a small screwdriver). once disconnected, connect your box in line then connect the power (if applicable).

may vary depending on what box you have.

And mormally you warm the engine up to full temp then fit (PITA as you will burn yourself whilst fitting). then start and leave to idle for a few mins.

Dont bother with them they are very crude mess up the computer redaings and your engine. Get a remap, make it a mild one if your car has done a bit of mileage.

I have just ordered a tuning box, which will boost my bhp up by 38bhp and around 70nm of torque, I have read a few threads about tdi tuning boxes and most people say that they are a waste of time and can harm your engine, but the one I have ordered has been highly recommended by a very good friend of mine who is a head mechanic at a garage in devon, they specialise in VAG group cars, audi, voltswagan, seat, skoda, he has 25 years experience, so he knows what he is talking about, he has one fitted on his passat estate 100bhp pd, he raced his work buddy who has a golf 130bhp pd and beat him, his mate now has one fitted, infact all the mechanics with the diesel pd engines have one fitted, my friend has had it on his car for 2 years, his engine has done 180,000 miles and he has had no problems what so ever, another guy he knows has had it on his engine for 4 years and he has had trouble free motoring too, the one I have ordered is specifically for the PD engine, they are made in Germany and they have the genuine vag plugs already fitted on the box, so you just plug and play, he has never heard of anyone that has had problems with there engines or anything else with this particular tuning box, I know it sounds too good to be true, but if they were that bad, then surely these guys wouldn't have them fitted on there own cars, and after all, they know what there talking about, has anyone heard of one of these box's causing damage to a PD engine????? If so I would love to know!! ;););)

Has anyone got a RR graph using a tuning box?

I've got some on the dyno computer.

They're hilarious. Maximum I have seen so far is a +11bhp (tweaked it 13 and it kicked out black smoke and emission lights) increase they always claim remap figures which is rubbish, yet people don't question them and still go out and buy them

They cause a sudden torque spike, which is mistaken for doing a good job.

I can make a tuning box for PD engines that would cost me 90p......and thats not a joke. Maybe I will start making my own tuning box's :cartman:

this is no lie, my mate has a 130 ibiza and put a plug and play box on it, and he put his car on the rollers at AmD and no word of a lie, it made 160bhp and 301ftlb

I'd like to see the torque line

Its very simple to break down really, in a proper remap approx 14 maps are adjusted to produce the power and deliver correctly.

A tuning box changes 1 thing.....injection, and by no means accurately either

ill try and get the graph off him, i couldnt beleive it would make that difference, but maybe its not the same for everyone else, the amount of crap it was chucking out on the rollers was horendous

But does he know 100% that there isn't a remap on the ECU? Has he had the car from new?

well, he took the plug and play off, cause he decided on a remap, and the before dyno showed 132bhp and 231ftlb, so it was standard and he had it mapped to 175bhp and 308ftlb

Can't stand it when people do stuff on the cheap. They then moan why it all goes tits up.

'cars really lumpy and smokey' 'mpg's all over the place'.....

If you're gonna do things, do it properly or not at all.

The digital tuning boxes are actually not as bad as is being suggested. They DO increase power very nicely, and they do not increase smoke *that* much.

The power increase sure is more than 11 bhp - and that was RR proven.

The resistor mod is dirt cheap and is definitely crude and will cause much more smoke and lumpy idle etc.

There is zero doubt a proper remap will be vastly better then a resistor or digital tuning box, both for power and smoke.
