Hey

I'd just come back from a 2 week holiday and when I tried to start my car it was completely dead! No lights on the dash etc...

When the aa man came the battery only had about 2v. When car was started he noticed that both the main cooling fan and the air-con fan were on (air-con was switched off) and then stopped when the engine had warmed up. The aa man said he used to work for vw and there was this problem with Golf ecu's which had the fan's on constantly and this could be the same problem.

The aa man wanted to test the battery but despite leaving the car running for over 30mins the battery still didn't have enough volts for him to perform his test. Thankfully, the car was left on our drive so I was waiting for the aa man in my warm house and not an airport car park!

Has anyone else noticed the cooling fans on from the start? or experienced anything similar?

Guess I'm going back to the dealer next week then.... :(

sounds more like alternator failure if the battery wasn't charging, and a faultly fan switch

Just got the car back from the dealer who's put it down to a faulty battery and replaced it. They also said that they'd done a recall which was to flash the ecu, they weren't however very forthcoming with what difference this would make. Does anyone know?

mine had the recall work done a few months back. i had a similar experience with mine. got back from a week abroad on the 4th december and the battery was totally dead, had to jump it off my dads car.

from what i recall of the thread about this recall it was only an update to the engine map.

i dont know about fans but my alarm kept going off for a few days running up the my trip so my guess is that the alarm has been going off while i was away and its drained the battery. its booked in on monday so i should hopefuly find out then!!
