I've let my oil level drop to the bottom of the dipstick so I can top it up to full and measure the number of miles it takes to drop to the bottom again. I'm using the knurled bit of the dipstick as maximum and minimum. Tonight I topped it up and I was really surprised it took 0.5 litres and not the 1.0 litre I thought it was. Where did I get the idea it was 1.0 litre to fill from bottom to top?

1 ltr is the normal amount of oil that most VAG engines need to go from min to max.

My Boc has been down to the bottom a couple of times and a litre puts it to the top mark nicely. Strange yours only takes half a litre.

When did you check the level? Just after driving or did you leave it for a couple of hours and then check?

Reading the title to this thread, the first thing that came into my mind was.... Yes there are a few on this forum now....

I thought most cars use 1 litre as the min to max limit, not just VAG?

Are you sure the oil had drained into the sump and settled when you measured the min?

 That was my second choice. My first was how mine gets almost molten hot and i cant even touch it to check the level

I check the oil once per week and I park the car in a public car park in the morning as I know it is level, and then check it before driving home. I filled it to the max level ages ago and have checked it weekly since then. On Friday it had reached the min level (bottom of knurled area) so I filled it. I expected it to be 1 litre but according to the markings on my 2 lire oil bottle it was 0.5 litre. I waited for the oil to settle as usual.

Slightly off topic but if anyone's interested my friendly dealer says that on the 1.2TSI it's 0.5 litres from min to max.

Can't say myself yet since it hardly uses any. This sort of info. ought to be in the handbook but I can't find it.
