The Dreaded Water Pump Problem!

My Cupra 290 had it's thermostat housing replaced a couple of months ago due to a leak. The car was just out of warranty but the dealer/Seat repaired free of charge.

I was happy until I took the car back in for an Aircon fault. Upon inspection I was notified that the water pump is now leaking and needs replacing!

I'm no mechanic but I thought this was an all in one repair. This has the potential for a big bill.

I'm quite peeved off as the car hasn't even done 30k!

I feel your pain on this.
Had my thermo housing replaced under warranty.

It was the seal between the two on mine that went.

The bit that annoyed me was that I went to. A garage and they phoned the dealer about the part and were told that they should buy all of the assembly Inc the water pump.

But under warranty they only replace the faulty part in this case the housing unit nothing that its attached to.

Even more so out of warranty the part was £140 quid...... Labour........ 600+ as they have to essentially get to the middle of the engine.

I phoned seat directly to push it through them and complain and they basically said its down to the dealer for gratuity.

My cupra had done 32k miles.

I feel that we should all get together and get a petition or something going, cos there are so many of these problems recently.

All the best of luck with it though.
And definately get the seat customer support team involved too.

My arguement was that I wasn't offered the waterpump change when they replaced the thermostat housing even as a paid extra.

It's a total nightmare, it's a well known fault on these engines.

The dealer did say that it's unlikely that I'll need to pay for it. I'll let them argue over it.

I've never lost any coolant, it's always been on the full mark. Dunno if I'm being taken for a ride at times?

My dealer is usually very reputable but I'm thinking of taking the car to an indy specialist for a proper look!

The Aircon prob is another kettle of fish! I'm insisting they repair it as I reported it before the warranty expired.

My jan 2019 started losing coolant last November. Fortunately the water pump was replaced under warantee but mine had just 11k miles on the clock. I’m still wondering how long this one will last now with the amount of failures

In the UK, Consumer Rights Act is up to 6 years from the date of purchase, regardless of warranty. You could get an independant inspection report and commence a small claim via the courts.

Or, especially if it has full Seat service history, open a case with ‘talk to Seat’. Be prepared to be fobbed off for a couple of weeks and escalate to their executive team.

However, their customer service is woeful and is the reason why I’ll not buy another VAG car after my current one.

Don’t accept their initial offer an be prepared to fight.

Sorry for my ignorance, but can I ask if this is an EA211 family engine with the plastic water pump/thermostat mounted on the "back" end of the cylinder head? My 1.0 litre 3 cylinder CHZB engined Ibiza it in this position and I've heard they do tend to develop leaks. Replacing it looks moderately awkward but I'd have a go if mine ever needs done However I hear bleeding the system after filling with coolant can be quite problematic and that worries me more than the mechanicals involved in renewing the parts.

Thanks folks. I do wish "they" - motor manufacturers in general - would stop making these sort of parts out of plastic. I had a lot of trouble with oil leaks on my boy's 2007 Astra 1.6 which has a plastic cam cover. not only did it leak down the front of the engine but also down the spark plug recesses where you couldn't see it was doing it until it started causing missfires. By then it had ruined the coil pack so I replaced the gasket and coil pack which seemed to sort it. Unfortunately it did it again about 6 months later so I had a talk with our local Vauxhall indy who said "Oh, they are well known to warp the covers. We just fit a new cover complete. Do you know it has a built in, non renewable, PCV valve which if it fails means you have to replace the cover anyway? Don't mess about with it just do a complete cover". I got a cover from Autovaux (great people) at a considerable saving and all's been well. Had it been an alloy cover I'm sure it would have been fine! Grrrrrr!
