the effect 180bhp on top speed

Ive mdoified my 16v ibiza cupra sport mk2. Shes been cammed, lowered, with an induction kit(no cool air feed) and cat back exhaust system.

After being rollin' roaded it came back as 179bhp. Seat quotes a top end speed of 135mph. With these mods, i tested it on a flat stretch of the M4 and got 137mph out of it which i was quite dissapointed about cuz i was expecting more. The rev counter never actually hit the red, think it was between 500-1000 rpm under the red.

Is this normal? Would the extra 30bhp make only a little difference in top speed? And if its not normal, what could be the cause of the lack of power

cheers

As far as I know mate, induction kit usually improves the throttle response, and a cat back exhaust along with cams improve the top end but you loose some low down grunt. So if anything it should have improved your top speed a little. SEAT quote 135mph, so thats about 145 on the speedo (as speedo always over-reads). But at those speeds you must take into account the levelness of road surface, tyre pressure, wind resistance (heavy head winds). Also think you need to rag it in every gear to get to that speed because a bit of momentum is needed to help it accelerate to that speed.

On the other hand, 137 is plenty, especially on the M4

just would love to hit the 140 mark. Do you think getting it chipped or remapped would be a good idea? and what increases should i expect as regards to top speed bhp?

the kinetic energy of an object is directly proportional to the square of its speed.

That means that for a twofold increase in speed, the kinetic energy will increase by a factor of four

Plus Aerodynamics, tyre friction are all against you (especially in a crap shaped hatchback)

So 13" tyres, smaller wing mirrors & taping up your bonnet & wipers would go a long way

Or you could just grow up & be sensible

how can increasing bhp make you go faster! my car will still only go as fast top end as it did standard as the engine will only rev so far and with same gearbox the speed you get out of it will be the same!

If you wanted to lay ply wood or cardboard on the bottom of the car you could have a flat floor - that'd help aerodynamics too.

who mentioned soap-box carts;) cardboard, plywood!

surely this 16v is slow? see other thread for faster cars!

on a more serious note.... F1 ( other race cars are available ) spends millions trying to get more power to go that fraction quicker so how much are you prepared to spend on a 2k car?

Why would you *want* to go that fast though? It's bloody stupid and irresponsible doing it on motorways and on track days I highly doubt you will be able to get up to 140 before the next corner! Or is it just so you can say your car goes up to 140? :D

Seems like everyone was implying that. :)

Excellent:lol:

dont know about anyone else but ive always prefered improved acceleration over top end speed, I tend to feel its doing alot more damage trying to get the revs to the red line in 5th gear.

My spec is below and I did that speed when I just had a filter, decat, manifold & exhaust. Now well over 145mph..... tested on a private road of course

The man's right you know. Extra power won't make your top end any higher - you'll just get there quicker.

The engine is rev limited and the gears are of fixed ratio.

The only case in which extra power can increase your top speed is if (before mods) the car didn't have enough power to redline in fifth. Extra power will bring you further towards the red and hence top speed will be higher.
