If the car's washed properly and thoroughly there shouldn't be any grit to pick up

If you wash the car outside there is every chance that dust will fall on the car between the wash and dry stage... extreme yes but still possible.

Also relying heavily on the shampoo to clear away every bit of dirt which does not always happen. No shampoo is 100%...Lacquer is porous so dirt does ingrain into the lacquer hence you have to clay etc.
