Could anyone provide a picture or diagram showing the location of the thermostat on the 1.4 petrol engine?

Also, if anyone has changed it, how much coolant did you lose? i.e. How much G12 will I need to buy?

stood in front of the car, it's on the right side of the block, above the gearbox

You will loose a bit of coolant, not gallons though.. Litre at most?
 
Can't remember... but it's sort of obvious which location it goes into when you're there.

thinking laterally, it should be the top hose to the rad (but that's me guessing)
 
It should be a green block held in with a plastic horseshoe style clip on the right hand side of the engine block. Paid about £9 for a genuine VW part from fleabay.

As Mork said you should only lose about 1l of coolant. Make sure you let your engine cool first ;)

Are you confusing the thermostat with the coolant temperature sensor?
 
For anyone who cares:

Coolant Temp Sensor - Take from front of engine, located next to nearest rad hose.

Thermostat - Take from right hand side of engine (or front left wing, if you prefer). Located behind second rad hose, secured by two bolts.

FYI, the coolant 'loss' on removing the thermostat was around 2.5 litres. About 500ml comes out of the rad hose with a further 2 litres from the block/expansion tank once you pull out the thermostat. Managed to catch around 2 litres using a jug wedged in the gap on the RH side of the engine. Best to filter it back in to the expansion tank through a gauze to remove any larger dirt particles which get washed in to the jug.

No further losses of coolant if you are doing the coolant temp sensor at the same time, unfortunately SEAT gave me the wrong one and I needed the car so that'll now be a seperate job, if required (I was only changing it as the coolant was going to be out, the thermostat was the broken part).
 
Having replaced these parts, I'm still getting problems with over cooling.

Coudl there be another underlying issue causing the thermostat to fail or have I just lucked out and replaced a broken one with another duff?
 
Got any cooling fins left on the radiator?

Is the plastic piece funneling air to the radiator from the grille still?

Yup, the rad appears in good order and I can't see any issues with air flow to it.

The fans are cutting in as they should, although the AC has a mind of it's own - but that's another problem!

The car doesn't always over cool. 9/10 times it quickly heats up to 90°C and stays there, but that 1/10 it will fluctuate between 70-90°C.
