Well i finally tracked my engine temp probs back to a sticking thermostat and went to get a new one today... popped into my local car parts place and they found 4 different ones for my car on the system! My car is a leon mk1 cupra turbo. 2000 - x reg.
They mentioned different shapes or something! Any ideas which one i would have and how easy are they to replace? Im told they are below the inlet manifold or something.
thanks guys.

My temp gauge seems to be below 90c quite a lot of the time, so im asuming the thermostat is also sticking.... does this do any damage if I dont get it changed ???

well i'd have thought that the engine won't be running as efficiently as it won't be reading as up to temperature yet.

Why not phone a Seat Dealership with your Chassis Number and get them to look up the right 'stat for your car and then go back to the motorfactor and see if they can cross reference

But the difference is more than likely to be to due the lots of slightly differning engine codes in the Leons

I went to the dealer and got the right one... as you are there for the sake of a few quid is it worth the time and fuel going somewhere else afterwards?!
Anyway got the right one, seal etc and decided to fit it today...WFT!!!
Tell me its not where i think it is? Ont he from of the engine wedged behind the alternator? not the easiest place to get to. Any oen changed theirs before and got tips?!

Did mine on my mk3 but its the same as on the leon. I just took the alternator off to give a bit more space then it was only 2 bolts to get the thermostat out. Shouldnt take more than an hour in total mate

STill unsure about my thermostat...... today the weather was a couple of degrees warmer.... around 4.5 c..... the temp stayed at 90..... just seems that when driving in the really cold stuff then the temp drops below 90 when driving, but noticed it went back up to 90 when sitting at the lights......

Im getting a similar problem to this. When i'm stationery the car heats up to 90 degrees ok but once on the move again it goes down & up randomly between 70 - 90 degrees. I've tried 2 temp sensors & still the same could it be a problem with the thermostat?

Also, a week after changing the temp sensor the engine management light has come on again

may be worth checking for a air lock in the system. apparantly if you take the lid off the expansion chamber and let the car warm up to full temp it will release any air locks. you may lose a bit of coolant. Can't stress the 'watch out that coolant is bloody hot!' bit enough here!

still havent fitted my thermostat yet, was looking to see if anyone had any tips on getting to it! may try removing the alternator for ease of doing. It's bloody cold out there so the less time the better!
