Good guide to follow http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?p=16925102

Had new one intoday, before it was getting to 75 deg max with either my scangauge or my DM200.
Just been out, and it holds at 89 deg now.

Moral of the story, don't trust the dash gauge.

Some info

Pull coolant hose off connecting flange -3-.
‒ Unbolt securing bolts -4- of connecting flange -3- and remove connecting flange -3- with thermostat -1-.
Installation

Installation is carried out in the reverse order, when doing this note the following:

‒ Moisten new O-ring -2- with coolant.
‒ Loosen thermostat -1- in the connecting flange -3- and turn 1/4 by (90 °) to the right.
‒ Loosen connecting flange -3- with thermostat -1- in engine block.
Note:

The brace on the thermostat must be almost vertical.

‒ → Tighten securing bolts -4-.
Tightening torque: 15 Nm

The alternator was off anyway, but you can do it still with it installed.
Remove the alternator connector for better access, if still on the car.
If on an LC180 move the bracket the N249 is on, out of the way.

Time 40 minutes ish.
