Think my clutch is on the way out

Noticed on the way home tonight when in 3rd or higher and at about 2.5k rpm planting the throttle results in revs shooting up to about 3k before the car actually pulls, not to mention a horrid smell when it does. So, guess it's new clutch time. I think I want something stronger than the standard so I've got 'headroom' as it were.

So what are my options? I do know about the CG Motorsport option, but haven't actually read or heard from anyone on here who has had one. I then need to think about flywheel as well, I want a dual mass - where's cheapest? Do I need anything else?

Is it the first time it's happened? When I first got mine it used to once or twice on the motorway home from buying it, but from actually using the car instead of sat on the drive, it hasn't happened since :)

I honestly wouldn't worry too much. When they are new and run in they are known to slip a bit. Only problem with these, especially on motorways you can be lazy and put your foot down in 6th at lower speeds and it'll pull well, when really you could down shift. If it happens a good few times a week then I would panic. :)

Well tried yesterday and didn't notice it - defo going to keep my eye on it, and in the meantime line up replacement parts in case it does start to get worse.

I've got a rattly DMF so I'm in the same boat, and i'm looking to change it come Feb at service time with all the belts.

Would appreciate it if you could keep me in the loop in this :)
I'd want a SMF, but don't wanna pay SACHS prices but would like one which could take a remap, but without the SMF chatter noise

Have you seen a few horror stories regarding SMF issues with smashed gearboxes? I haven't as of yet. Apparently theres a good Valeo SMF kit. Something to do with a longer 'something' which acts to dampen the flywheel with the clutch, and not cause the chatter.

Doubt you'll get a quiet SMF to be honest. I'll be sticking with DMF since I don't fancy a gearbox rebuild haha :)


I've got a Darkside SMF setup, not the quietest in the world but the difference is night and day.

Not many stories with destroyed gearboxes and SMF. There are stories of smashed bell housings when DMF fails at high RPM.... ;)

The Valeo kit does make is quieter however, doesn't hold as much torque as the Sachs DMF kit. It's fine for standard power but remapped / higher torque outputs, slips.

I ran our other car, a 1.9 TDI Touran with a Valeo SMF for about a month. It was an absolute nightmare, it wouldn't release the gears properly, made a real racket at 2k rpm and generally didn't feel 'right'. It put me off the whole SMF thing to be honest, and I ended up having to fork out for a standard set up again.

I suppose it is all supposition and rumour as to longer term reliability, but then the vibration does have to go somewhere. On the other hand, SMF's are a more tried and tested technology...

For me though running standard on a daily drive an SMF doesn't really offer me anything other than it being lighter I guess. Just drove to work and the clutch held up all the way. I'm wondering if heat is part of the problem, I wonder if it only starts to let go once it's hot. Still going to change it though!
