hey, thinking of buying a 99 model, but worried about all these coolant threads, what should i look for if i do go look at this car. thanks

sorry can be a bit tumbleweed in here :) shame as i love the old toledo shape myself

what model you after ?

What version of the Toledo?

Don't be put off by the coolant threads - there has been a spate of them but I'm not aware of there having been a particular problem. Remember these forums are very often about niggles rather than "oh everything's running fine today".

Common to the Toledo are:

1) Damp in the footwells through doorseal issue or leaking pollen filter.
2) MAF failure.
3) Fan failure (burnt out fuse).
4) Water pump impeller (upgrade to metal one).
5) Potential cracked sump (it sits quite low).
6) Aura radio can play up.

That's all I can think of at the moment. They are generally very reliable and most issues are relatively low cost. If it's a V5 you're after the chain driven engines are pretty bullet proof and capable of big miles.

as far as i know its:

99
1.9Diesel
Has Two Year Test

looking to sell my ibiza, as i may be starting in a college 220miles away, and will be making the trips home and back on weekends, so need a diesel and comfortable car :p

Just Wondering What the MAF is??

oh and if ye can could ye tell me the specs?
e.g:
bhp?
and what it will include (if ye know, or this question is stupid lol) like E/W? C/L P/S
the advert says nothing lol

Thanks

Mass Air Flow sensor. It's a fairly common but sometimes hard to recognise fault that can result in underperformance, hesitation or poor starting. It's an easy-fit part though and I think is about £60 if you hand over the old one.

I don't know anything about the diesels I'm afraid. In general though the Toledo is very safe and comfortable on long journeys.

Parkers is your friend for that:

AFAIK the TDI's came in 3 versions 110, 130 and 150 bhp so you would need to find out which. The 110 is the most common. The 150 (sport) is quite rare.

I've heard of the fabled 150 but I don't think I've ever seen one for sale!

If you want to know more about cars, I quite like www.honestjohn.co.uk. They're not afraid to totally slate a car that deserves it. Fortunately the Toledo gets a very good write up, as does most SEATs. You're definitely buying into a good name.

As for the 'coolant threads', don't forget the weather is getting colder out there so it could be just a seasonal thing. As GrayT says, these forums are all about 'my car has a problem', no-one will come on here and say 'my car is running really well'. Don't let it put you off, the cars are on the more reliable end of the spectrum. The fact that you didn't get a reply straight off shows how infrequently these boards get visitors!

If it's a 99 then the chances are it'll be a 110bhp - pretty sure the 130 didn't come along until 03ish.
I have come across 90bhp Toledo TDIs but they're quite rare.

The 110TDi is a great engine, solid as a rock and very economical while not being too slugish. Mine is on 78k miles and has given me no trouble - these engines will easily go on to 200k plus if looked after.

One work of advice from my experiance, test the air-con properly, when I bought mine it was February and I didn't check it properly, turned out the compressor was broken - £1000 repair, quite a common problem apparently.

Possibly, but you never know. I picked up my 51 plate V5 for £1360, and my mate got his 99 V5 for a few quid more than a grand!

They are not a 'favoured' car, most people go for the Leon, which keeps their prices high, and deflates the Toledo price. It's amazing how few people like a boot!

What's NCT? Is that like the UK road tax?

I think for that money I'd definitely be looking very closely at everything. But I'd still have a look...

Yeah! Toledos Are Very Cheap Compared To Leons, But I Like Toledos, An Am Pretty Sure They'd Be Very Comfy.
NCT Is National Car Test, Its Like MOT, But In Ireland We Get Two Years Instead Of One.

I've found the Tolly to favour comfort rather than performance. With the quicker Toledo's you can get them messed up when you push them. It does feel like they wouldn't need much tweaking to get the suspension and traction to match the engine though, perhaps a touch stiffer and about an inch lower would work quite nicely.

I can't really compare a Toledo with a Leon, I suspect they would be very similar. But the Toledo wipes the floor with any other car I've had. Then again, I used to have a Vauxhall fetish, and it's not difficult to beat those!!

I have no doubt they exist, as there are parts listed for it. But I thought the V5's were rare, the 150 TDi's are like rockin horse poop! Shame really, I bet the 150 TDi's are quicker than the V5's, either as standard or with a mild remap.

dont really know much about the v5's. so cant join in on the convo :p
anyone know if a 110 can be remapped? and if so.. to what break?
