Thinking of getting DSG any comments

Hi All

Thinking of chopping in my FR+ for a new Leon DSG. Been told by the doc to get an auto car.

I would be very greatful for any guidance. Cheers

If you need an auto, there really isn't any box better in terms of all round use and mpg than a DSG, there's even a DSG in the Bugatti Veyron - that's how good it is!

When it came out in the TT 3.2 EVERYONE said it was the best thing ever. Think it's supposed to suit some engines more than others but may be this is down to degrees of how good it is, rather than being shite in one engine. I think the fact that all the major manufacturers are working on similar systems tells you how the future of autos, so clearly this is the business. Quicker acceleration, better economy, smoother shifts - the list goes on.

Probably the strangest thing is that Porsche haven't yet got a version released, and they invented it 20 years ago. Weird

I've got an Altea TDi DSG and reckon its the best auto I've ever driven. Works fantastic with the diesel engine and the gear changes are rapid and smooth.
Only drawback I have come across is the fact that if you go for a tuning box or remap, you have to ensure the torque does not go above 265 ish lbft.
I use a tuning box though and its fine, just on the limit , maybe , but it certainly does shift.
In a Leon, guess its serious performance. They look great IMHO as well.

If you like auto's, you'll love the DSG. If you don't like auto's, it probably won't change your mind. Think of it as a very good auto with non of the torque convertor downsides and you'll be very happy.

Things that put me off:
1) I potentially run our cars to 100,000 miles and there just aren't enough high millage DSG cars around to know how reliable it is. I'm not saying it isn't reliable, but you know where you stand with a high millage manual and the local gear box specialist down the road.
2) I was trail breaking into a decreasing radius corner in a new Golf GTI DSG when it decided to change down a gear . Don't be fooled by the "its used in the Veyron so must be good" line. That gear box has an extra gear, can cope with four times as much torque and probably costs more than an entire Golf GTI.
3) You can't do heal-and-toe down changes which IMHO are the most satisfying aspect of driving.

I hate auto gearboxes but I recently drove a Golf GTI with the DSG gearbox and I was immediately coverted. It had none of the bad traits of auto gearboxes I had driven before apart from the slight hesitation when pulling away. The gearchanges were seamless and to me it has all the benefits of auto and manual combined. But i do respect the purists who want the ultimate control of a manual.

The best idea is to get one out for a test drive for an hour or so and ,ake your own mind up.

:clap Well I've done it. Placed my order today. Lucky for me there is an Emotion Red DSG sat at the docks & it will be delivered somtime next week to the dealer. I am due to collect it on the 29th.
