Thoughts and Concerns...

Hey guys! I've seen a GTi 16v that I really fancy. Initially, I was looking for a model with AC and a sunroof, with £1600 budget, I was pretty certain that I'd find a decent one! Anyway, this one's come up, (with none of the above) but it's £1300, low mileage, really clean, last of the Mk2s... with a new MOT, (before he sells it on)...

Anyway, here's the problem, which has aroused some suspicion. Reading extensive amounts of readers rides, I know GTi's pretty well now. SO here goes;

1. Why does this GTi not have a passenger airbag?
   
2. Also, it doesn't have the facelift grill (it's V reg), and it has single headlights and pre facelift indicators...?

It's only done 65,000 miles, and seems very clean (especially inside) But...

Basically, should this be a cause for concern?

Any answers / suggestions would be much appreciated (Going to visit the car next weekend).

EDIT: I am aware that these kinda "what to look out for" issues have been covered some times before, but not these.

Like I already told you, it doesn't have the passenger air bag because its one of the last off the line and they ran out!

Arun, shut up you tart. I'm scared of buying a sh*t box that was involved in a crash or whatever, or something terrible like that. I've discussed it with my dad, I sound a little anal, I know that - but I don't want to make a mistake.

It should have an airbag, though we did go through a phase of removing them on here a while back.

The grille may just have been damaged & replaced without really thinking about it.

tbh, I can't see anyone being bothered to spend money on repairing a 16v over the last few years as they've been pitifully cheap and worth a lot more in bits for a good few years.

2. been crashed & not replaced with proper parts.... ie on the cheap

second point is what I thought old 'uns. Might've been crashed pretty early on say... then double headlights would've been expensive etc?... I dunno, I have HPi'd it Arun, and it's clear.

But learning about the airbag as an option has changed my view on it ...

M0rk, I did suspect that people might've removed them...(insane much?)

Other than that, someone might've fitted Morette headlights on it at some point?

if you ask him for the log book numbers ( or is it the mot numbers ) you could double check the milage, so it hasnt got the gti headlights ?

Nah Kezz, has the same headlights as I've got. It hasn't got history before him... so it does raise a bit of suspicion... but having said that, he's a mechanic (the seller), and surely he'd have a pretty fair idea of what he was buying?... He's kept a record of everything he's done since owning it.

tbh for that money you could get a right en mate , i know you said he is a mechanic but just check the milage ask him for the numbers its free to do on the dvla

Yeaah I get you ... The right one's sure to come along sooner or later! Think it's a lot to spend on what appears to be a "dodgy one"...

Leave it llyr IMO

sounds like it got crashed (not declared) then fixed with parts from the wrong facelift (I have nearly done the same, but I checked into them)
and no airbag, like m0rk said, could of been replaced, or deployed, but instead they got a glovebox?
