Hey guys,
I'm getting slightly worried now, my battery light has come on, i remember parking my car up in a tight spot which involved alot off full locking the steering, and then after about 45mins going back to my car and started it the battery light was on and stayed on, i checked the engine and checked the battery leads were tightly on which they are and theres no unusual sounds coming from the engine, my car has covered 172.000 miles and has so far not let me down, cars always doing long journeys on the motorway and some short journeys on A roads, can anyone shed me some light in what has caused this and what should i do, i always rely on my car so need to sorted fast.

Thanks

could be an alternator or a wiring problem, on mine the main power lead going from alternator to battery was shorting out and blowing fuses so this brough on the lgiht, pity the alternator was changed before the short was found :(

i know it sounds silly, but have you checked to see if your fan belt is still there, you say you were doing a lot of shunting into a tight spot, i'm pretty sure your fan belt works off the same pully as your power steering, it's worth a look. Was there any screaming on start up, or at any time coming from the engine bay?

Nope no screaming or anything, but will have a look now, ive just notice that when i put the windows down its getting slower going down and when i start my car now, its started to sound like my battery needs a charge, im beginning to think it is my alternator now :(

Does it really matter, i wanna get an alternator now, but does really have to match the code on my old alternator, i mean, couldnt i just get another one from another tdi s toledo and fit into mines and have a different code on it and would it work, same if i just got an alternator out of a seat leon tdi s would that work, i fink me just looking for an exact code is just too much faffing about.

fan belt was fine and still intacted, took it to a car spares shop and they checked it over and checked the battery and seen no charge is coming through so needed an alternator, then driving it back home and then everything cut off and then couldnt started again because the battery was very week, call AA to charge it for me, booked in the garage for monday now, atleast thats 1 problem out they way.
