status subject to change
hi all,

ok so im going to change read pads/disks on my 2000 leon cupra. no problem there been there done that,
However anybody know what tools i need to change the calipers also? I have a wind back tool, so am i correct the only sticking point may be the right size allen key? anyone know what size i need?

thanks

Can't remember what size allen key, but you will need one attached to a socket and a lot of welly to remove the carrier bracket, it's a real bugger. I ended up using an impact driver. Couldn't get on with the windback tool either. It wouldn't wind the piston back far enough to clear the new pads - maybe it was partially seized. I used too much force and broke the handbrake mechanism so ended up fitting new calipers! Also need to be careful not to overtighten the hydraulic pipe union to the caliper.

My allen key bolts had been rounded off by previous owner :(.

soaked with multiple coats of penetrating oil and a long stilsons just about managed to free them up

If you mean the bolts to undo the sliding pins, you need 2 spanners because they lock together. One of them is a size that's not used much, either 11mm or 14mm, can't remember which.

If you are not changing the calipers it's a very quick simple job.

Just need an open ended 15mm spanner, 13mm spanner, 18mm spanner, piston wind back tool, phillips screwdriver, wire brush/emery paper.

13mm bolt secures the caliper onto the slide pins, use th 15mm spanner to stop the slide from rotating. pull caliper away from the disc. Undo the screw holding the disc onto the hub and remove the disc. Note the disc will come off without removing the brake pad carrier, if you wanted to remove this use the 18mm (They'll be tight!). Clean the hub flange (mmmmm flange) and the brake pad carrier ready for the new parts. Wind the piston fully back into the caliper using the tool. Fitment is the reverse of removal, remember a little anti-seize on the brake pad carrier and dependant on what brand pads some on the backing plate of the pads. Remember to pump the foot brake gently to push the pads to the disc before pulling on the handbrake, or driving off!

If you are changing the calipers you won't need the wind back tool as they come supplied back. Replacement is just unbolt brake pipe (13mm or 14mm?) and un-hook the handbrake cable, refit new caliper in reverse. Then bleed the brake when fully assembled.

Nice and simple job! 30 mins work on a lift in a workshop if doing the calipers too!

The wind back tool pushed piston back into the caliper when replacing the pads, or both pads and discs.

Check out his video, exactly the same as the leon

I don't remove the carrier, the part they call the 'bracket' as the discs come off without touching it!
Also you can see they don't use a real wind back tool just a g-clamp and some pipe grips!
