passed MOT ect...

Was quoted by halfords to top my brake fluid up for £45 which I assume is a bit of a rip off seen as though you can but the fluid next to nothing.

Which is the right fluid for my car and is it a simple buy DOT 4 fluid and pour into the container to even it up making sure the level sits between min and max?

Tried you tube but cant find much.

You may find it It in your manual but it should also say on the cap. But usually is Dot 4. If you are OCD people like to buy the same brand that's in there but unless your the first owner of the car who knows if the brake fluid has been topped up with orginak seat brake fluid. So yes any decent brand brake fluid will work. I just pagid from euro car parts. It their own brand and works find but does need changing 2 years on the dot (according to my tester- but u should change it every 2 years anyways. Yes you want to fill it to the max mark. But if you can check your brake pads thickness first because it is probably a little low because they have been worn down due to use which is normal. So u may not need to top up as the excess is just currently in the brakes. (if you type in on YouTube have to change front brake pads. You will see what I mea regarding pads and how it relates to your brake fluid level.

You could also call seat and ask them what brake fluid does your car take and then ask for a price. If it's cheap enough you might as well buy OEM (original equipment manufacturer

I'd think that while your car was in Halfords Autocentre for its MOT, they were just advising that you had the brake fluid replaced due to either the age of that car or by them having checked the water content of your brake fluid - or maybe even just looked at the appearance of it. That would fit in with the money they quoted.

As said already, any quality DOT4 brake fluid is okay to use, I tend to buy VW Group's own fluid, but its not essential.

So, to finish off, if you don't know when that car last had its brake fluid replaced, get it replaced now - normally when a car is being looked after correctly, brake fluid is first replaced by the time is 3 years old, then again by the time it is 5 years old, then again by the time it is 7 years old ----- etc etc.
