Towbar dedicated electrics

I'm looking to get a tow bar fitted to my Leon but my car does not have the tow electrics prep.
If I'm looking at having the towbar fitted at an independent can I have have the dedicated electrics told would I have to have the universal bypass kit?

I had a Westfalia swan neck tow bar fitted a few weeks ago ,the car had no wiring prep done.I went to a few places for prices with the wiring kit and without, in the end I went without the kit because the kit was another £120 more.

Hi this is around the price I have been quoted what does the pre wiring in the factory actually give you?

If you have your car pre wired at the factory then you can just purchase a £75 compatible lead from your Seat dealer, plug it in and everything works. No coding or anything else required.

Hello not sure what more it gives you because you still have to run a live feed to the plug that charges the battery and run your fridge on your caravan There are a few links on here one that he fitted the wiring kit himself with pictures but it's not a job I would take on because you have to strip a lot of the inside of the car.

That was true on the earlier models but not any more. There was a change in the wiring part way through MY14 and the setup after that changeover date will do everything, including running the fridge and charging the caravan battery. I know this because that's how it is on my October '14 ST FR.

What engines do you guys have in your Leons to be towing stuff? Caravans?

I've got the 1.4 ACT engine in my ST FR and I must admit that I haven't actually towed with it yet. I only have a lightweight Eriba caravan so the weights are OK and with 150 brake horse it should have plenty of power to cope with the van.
This is the first petrol car I've had after 13 years of Saab diesels so I am expecting to have to row up and down the gears a lot more and consequently I'm expecting my fuel consumption to suffer accordingly.
Will post my findings once I've had the van out.

Hi thanks guys I have ordered the witter detachable towbar with the dedicated kit so I will let you know if it charges the caravan.
I have got a 1.4act and planning to tow about 1300 caravan to Cornwall so I will do a report how it gets on up the hills and the MPG I get.

I have a 2.0 FR 184 diesel, I don't have a caravan yet but will be getting one early next year. The Seat Leon FR184 won the car of the year in the camping and caravan magazine.
