Hi All,
picking up the car tomorrow, 1.9TDi FR, and it's the first time of owning a turbocharged engine.

Are there any warm up rituals to keep the turbo in good health other than obviously not driving too hard until fully warm.

Also is it good practice to let the engine idle for a few seconds before turning off after a run, so as to let the turbo cool down, or is this a thing of the past on modern engines.

Cheers,

Colin.

I just try to not let the turbo boost till the engine is up to a good temp and then just let the car idle for 1-2 mins when I stop, thats all you realy need to do mate.

Nice one Damoegan.

I remember back in the day, people fitting Turbo Timers to help avoid premature wear on the turbo. But this was on monster horsepower cars like the Sierra Cosworth and Escort Turbos.

Showing my age now :D.

Is the turbo on the TDi oil or water cooled?

Would like to buy a Haynes manual on the car to get some information but seems they don't make one for the MK4 Ibiza. Anyone know of any other type of manual available?

Not sure about it being water or oil cooled but my educated gues would be BOTH as im sure that the one on my car (20VT) is both.

There are people on here running 350bhp without turbo timers, infact I'm sure noone on here is running a turbo time.

Hope this helps mate.

Tbh On A Stock Turbo No Warming Up Or Warming Down Realy Needs To Be Done. Give It A Few Mins Before You Rev High I Wouldnt Worry Tbh!

I Was Thinking Of Getting A Turbo Timer But probably Selling Now :(

the turbo has an oil line to it, the oil is for lubrication of the bearings and I spose it helps cool a bit

the main turbo cooling device is the intercooler, it's mounted behind the front drivers side fog light on an FR (SMIC)and it's mounted middle front on a CUPRA (FMIC)

the intercooler cools the air from the air filter on route to the turbo, it works like a radiator but it's air cooling air rather than air cooling water

:D

never use the power! tbh! to quick to use all the time and would be dead if i did aswell  some1's gona get a DEAD BARGAIN!

welcome to the site  ColinM

LMAO

turbo on the 130pd is oil cooled.

the intercooler is after the turbo and before the intake and is used to cool the charge air , not to cool the turbo

oh yeah, it is on the blow side isn't it  ah well long day......................but the cooled charge air cools the turbo don't it ???

It would cool the turbo very slightly by keeping the inlet temps down when working but not do shite when you slow down or stop. Don`t think you can dig yourself out of this one that easily.. :p
