Yep was driving home this morning and turbo went followed by a horrific whinning noise. Cars now at the dealers so will have to wait and see the extent of the damage done.

Hopefully the dealers will sort it under warrenty but thats very unlikley, so the way im looking at it i've got two options replace with a KO4 (if anyones got one sitting around or can get hold of one for a good price give us a shout) or go big like gt2871r, but what kind of money are we talking to do this.

Thanks Rob

gt287r isnt much bigger than ko4 but holds better higher up the revs and can give quite a bit better mpg.

Why wouldnt SEAT do it under warranty though mate?

There are always ko4's floating round in the classifieds on various sites, but you should be putting as much presure on seat to fix under warranty as possible.... stg2+ will make it harder, but not impossible.

I hope it comes good for you though Rob, whichever way you go with it.

I hope they will do it under warrenty but you just never know with it been modified, anyway the service department was closed so will get on to them on monday.

the gt2871r was just a thought really if the worst comes to the worst and Seat refuse to do it under warrenty i might aswell just go bigger .

They wont get away with not doing it under warrenty easily though.

cheers Rob it was properly gutting seeing it sat on the back of the AA van:cry:.

Bad news Rob. What do you think caused it - i remember all the crap coming out of your zorst at the RR day!

Sad news mate. Your best chance will be to unbolt all the add-ons, set the map back to stock and play innocent. A lot of hassle I know, but if it helps get a free turbo it's probably worth it! Just got to weigh it up I guess........ good luck anyway!

tbh dont really know what caused it, car feels stong but guessing the crap coming out was early signs something was wrong. Was just driving up a hill, engine still cold and it just died. It didnt actually go kaboom lol but whinning really bad, whopefully its just the turbo and it hasnt taken anything else out with it.

Bit late to unbolt all the mods as the AA man took it straight to the dealers before they closed for the weekend, so will know whats what and where i stand on monday.

No chance it will be warranty in my opinion - not with all the bits to make stage 2+ on show for SEAT to see. Cant you take it out to have it stripped then put back in?

Out of interest Rob, the crap coming from your exhaust - excess fuel or oil? Also, am I right in remembering yours had the flat spot and jingling noise?

As it happens, I have a spare K04 sitting, but only in the event that my turbo goes the same way yours has. I would personally be more worried about bits of turbo getting round the intercooler and in to the engine.

And while my mind is still thinking about what you said, it was cold when it happened - were you giving it beans while it was still cold, and did you make a habit of doing that?

Sorry to hear about your Turbo Rob. Just when you got the ITG CAI fitted and engine running smoother.

Hopefully you'll will get it sorted under warranty.

Its stories like these that are make me think twice about getting a stage 1 remap when my car is running so well in standard form.

:scary:

RobH, I don't mean to ask probing questions at a particularly insensitive time, but did you have any early warning signs or has the car had an unusually hard life (big mileage?).

Really hope it gets sorted for you, and without too much cost or inconvenience.

If you go BT I would be mindful that the internals of the engine will suffer more stress at >400bhp. There are fuelling considerations (injectors etc...), cooling considerations (larger intercooler / possibly WMI considerations), and then you may need to think about bigger brakes. Given how bad the standard internals get carbon build up etc... you may want to insure yourself further by putting better valves and pistons in.

It's the right time to think about it, but factor some extra budget in for any BT plans.

i think the crap coming out the exhaust was fuel as it was running really rich but when the turbo went there was no smoke coing out the back and could possibly be a blown pipe.

No never give it some when its still cold and was doing around 3000 revs when it went and the cars done 23000 miles in 2 and a half years so not really a hard life.

Tbh dont think ill go BT, think ill stick with the K04 upon reading more on it.

Havnt had any jingling noises, occasionaly had the hesitation but the night before the car felt really strong so kinda out of the blue really and the lack of smoke when it went might be a blown pipe.

although had it serviced at awesome gti 3k ago and checked the dipstick thursday and it was below min wtf so put some more oil in and the dipstick showed like half, then yesterday when the turbo went the dipstick showed totally empty.

Fingers crossed for you mate, it would seem to be the more reasonable assumption and I VERY much hope for you it is.

Have you changed any pipes on the car and then not re-tightened them after bedding them in?
