Turbo kit for 2.0 16v

Hiya everyone,
At yesterdays "No-rice" meet I have seen best part of five vr6 mk3 golfs with a turbo fitted onto their 2.9l DOHC engine :scary:. Now i remember someone on here having fitted a turbo onto their 1.4l. But I was wondering whether there are any "kits" available for the 2.0 16v Ibiza/golf engine?? Reason I am asking because I'll soon be getting a mk2 cupra sport, but know that the engine is quite limited tuning-wise :(. Whereas on the mk3 beeza you can get a lot of ponies by chipping the ECU, and uprating the Intercooler and DV, on a mk2 you can only really get an Induction kit and a cat-back exhaust, before the power to cost ratio starts getting stupidly low. Now if a turbo was fitted, this would open a whole new window of possible engine modifications:drive1:.

Cheers for any replies in advance :D

I've been thinking along the same lines myself - mostly pipedreams in my case - and have been looking for info both on 16v turbos and VR6 turbo swap.

Quite a few chaps over on VWVortex have turbo'd their 16v motors, but I've struggled to find definitive equipment specs and costs etc. The most difficult part I think would be engine management - bolting a turbo on is pretty easy

All the kit's i've seen are along the lines of the EIP one mentioned above i.e ££££. Turbo manifolds are quite readily available tho, and not too expensive if you want to go the home-grown approach. Check out www.homemadeturbo.com for some inspiration! It's mostly Honda's on there, but you'll get some ideas

Cheers for all the info guys, but as its looking it'd be cheaper to save up for the 1.8T and than work on that. But good to see that there is at least one Ibiza with a turbo conversion. Maybe one day, when i have couple spare ££££ :D

Cheers

ToledoRaj I've been watching your turbo conversion on E38 for a while with interest. Do you have a cost for a kit to bring another 2.0 16v to the same spec as yet?

Pete

Hello mate, the problem with doing a Kit is that there are too many variaotions in engine.

If you think about it you've got 4 VW models, 1, Seat (ibiza) that have the 16v engine, then you've got tall 16v and short 16v blocks, then every turbo out there has a different flange meanuing the downpipe is different, then for every intercooler you need adifferent boost run etc, etc, etc.

SO a kit price is pretty much impossible, but I'd say mine owes me about £2600including engine mounts

£360 the manifold, (most imported manifolds are LHD and WONT fit, look at the one in the post above, where does the housing sit....right on top of your master cylinder/servo!!)

£200 to modify the inlet ( £500 for a full custom jobbie)
£100-500 for injectors depending on power
£60 for the spacer /(£450 pistons if you want to go that route).
£150/200 intercooler
£300 for all the pipe work/downpipe
£200 in samco
£150 for the turbo (upto £1000 depending on what you want)
£200 oil lines/return/fittings
Another £200 for odds and sods that you always dont plan for!!
Management £550 + mapping

I've just had to order engine mounts cos the power makes the engine move too much wich cracked my d/p which meant i had to make a new one!!

That's not bad TBH. It sounds like the costs involved are around the same as sticking a BAM engine in.

Be interested to see what power you get out of it as next year I'll be looking at getting more power from my Cordy and at the minute a BAM or VR6 are most likely.

ok, Bugjam, wasnt a great success:

I got a 1/4 mile time of
.

.
.
16.64 1/4 mile!!! @86mph (i did beat the yellow ibiza in the other lane but dont know what he was )running

so here's my excuses:

1)2.6 60ft cos i was being VERY gentle on my first run.
2)I'm usuallly race support for my mate Karl who owns the bronz 4*4 mk2 20vt that runs 11s, so I had 2 tool boxs, a big jack and 2 axel stands in the boot!!

3)oh and I realised i was hiting .5 bar, on closer inspection I found a 2" split in one of my silicone hoses so it was game over!!!

I've since changed the hose and am back up to 1bar, and I now cant put the power down for wheelspin!!

next on the shopping list is a new clutch cos mine is now slipping like mad!!

Flapper, i'm using a spacer plate that is bonded to the block and then a standard metal vw gasket. We've got a few cars running this setup and it's proving to be very reliable

as for the boot, sods law dictataes that I must carry every tool or the ones I leave at home wil be the ones I need

Turbo's a std cossie T3

cool - we were yapping at work when we get bored and the same suggestions actually came up once or twice - just before the modifying a escort cossie head to fit each side of a rover V8 but that ones still pending - lol

std cossie turbo and a plate with std gasket rather than a thicker gasket we were along the right lines then i guess

now THAT sounds interesting!!!

yeah basically the plate just becomes an extension of the block and the gasket goes on as per normal

drops it to 8.5:1 i'm only going to run a bar in this gear so it'll be more than fine

i looked at it briefly before rebuilding mine as pistons were required and a few 20vt about etc etc

just read the old thread - didnt realise you'd dropped an ABF in too - cool

you running an external wastegate underneath then ?

at 8.5 comp you gonna push it past 15psi or playing it safe ?

mad street sleeper though - love to see it in action

Flappper; I've been told that any more tha 1 bar on my turbo will take it out of its efficiency range so gonna keep it at a bar.

I'm struggling to get the power down as it is!!!

anyone got a cheap clutch/diff/slicks package they dont need anymore????

the manifold has the facility for external W/G but i'm actually running an escort TD one with a bleed valve as the cossie one i originally had didnt fit due to lack of room. It should now fit but i'll wait till i get a trick one b4 changing it
