Hi all i want to fit a Sat nav system with a TV screen. i have seen the double din approach and the pop out screen but i want somthing that looks as if the manufacture put it there. anyone done a mod like this? pluss any idea of the cost of a double din dash? and whats included in the price? i have seen pictures of the double system but cant work out what you lose as the climate copntrol is still there? i have a LCR by the way. i dont really want to be spending over £2000

I have the following planned (for a leon cupra)

Convert to double-din dash (£200)
Install 7" Xenarc touchscreen LCD monitor
Install mini-itx pc (£400 ish approx)
Use amp to power all 4 speakers

This gives me the following in the car:

GPS with voice navigation
MP3's
DivX and DVD's
Wireless internet
Tv/FM radio
Speedcamera locator and warning (audible over amps)

And this will also mean i get a basic pc which COULD be used for word doc's, note taking etc etc. All in all, it will cost around the £700 for ALL parts, software etc and prob a day or two's work installing it all.

Really depends on what you want in the car! I am going a little mad, but hey, it costs the same as a decent head unit and does SO MUCH more! woohoo!

may the farce be with you
pabs, i've also muchly been considering this approach...

i have seen this done on a pic of an audi, and he did a *very* good job, but custom made his surrounding panels - which probably took a long time to do...

I was thinking about mounting everything in the glovebox, and somehow wiring a touch sensitive 7" monitor into the dash somewhere, but never really discovered a good place.

I love my car, but there isn't anywhere to decently stick a car kit for my phone, let alone another piece of electronics..

i'm just sooo tempted by being able to browse onto my car's pc over wireless and dump mp3's on it... fantastic!

ho hum..

hehe, wicked aiii ;)

Well, as for pics, unfortunately nothing yet, unless u want pics of just the components.
The motherboard of the pc is 17cm x 17cm and is called a mini-itx system. Check out the links below for more info on these: The screen with a little custom work and shaping of the hole, should fit directly into a double din space, which means that there is no room for a head unit, but plenty of room behind the screen for a small amp or some of the pc components.

I have been working on this for ages, and came up with the idea to hide all of the PC inside a CD Changer case (for stealth reasons) and then put it into the glovebox. If i could get hold of a broken cd changer that came from a leon, or one that would fit, i could figure out if it would all fit or not. I may need to build a custom case for it, but that i would pick up from b&q or something ;)
The mp3car forums are a good place for a little bit of research, just do some searching in there to get some ideas. If you still want pics of the components, i can post some if you reply to this. Hope this gives you some ideas. The mini-itx website has many cases available too, with slimline cd-rom drives/dvd drives etc.

Btw, the monitor prices vary depending on which make you go for.

You have these two main choices, but you may need to import from japan via ebay etc.
Lilliput - they do a 7 inch touchscreen for prices between £150-220 depending on where u get it (if imported, you may get import tax etc added :( )
Xenarc, which is what i own, range from £180 - £300 and they are far more reliable and better built. I got mine from ebay through PCMEDIASTORE who are based in southampton.

 thought i sed that:

The screen will fit in a double din dash display. Therefore it goes where the head unit would be, ie in the dash. The double din dash has no ashtray or cigarette lighter, as the space is used for the stereo or screen instead.

When i get it all, and the double din dash, i will start to mould the screen into the dash before putting it in my car, so as to get it perfect before finishing.

Yeh its gonna be similar to that.
Not sure on the head unit placement tho. kinda hides the air/con etc controls below.
Cheers for the link

The screen mod is a custom job. I spoke to lots of the guys on the forums. They all do it themselves, and apparently its not too hard to do.
I shall definately be doing similar!

How do you intend to get sat nav through a tv? Just interested to see if you know something i dont? What kit do you need to achieve that?
Also, where will you mount your dvd player, and what dvd player will you use? As far as i am aware, they are quite big compared to pc drives.

i may be getting my wires crossed. i ment get a sat nav kit which is dvd capable (you just swap the discs over) seen a couple of these kits advertised in the back of max power! by the way does the double din come with a larger cage? as i might get a standard consol (if its cheaper and mod that to fit)
