Tyre noise or wheel bearing?

My FR since i got it seems to have fairly high tyre noise, i put this down to 18's etc.

But theres a constant wurring noise - with the spin of the wheel - and at its loudest around 35/40mph.

If a wheel bearing was on its way out - surely it would get louder when you corner on it and put weight on it? That doesnt happen... Also when sitting in the car at 35/40mph, I try to listen to see if its dominant in one corner of the car... but again - cant seem to determine where exactly its coming from.

I had pricey Yokohoma's on it when i bought it. Still have them on the back, and have some middle of the range tyres on the front. Swapping them round makes no difference. Pressures are also checked and all good.


Anyone else have this?

Might be worth checking the brakes. If the pads are sticking in the caliper, the pad could be resting against the disc.

You mean like a caliper being stuck on? Not releasing fully?

Yes, that kind of thing. The pads can get snagged with dirt and brake dust preventing them from moving freely, they normally just need removing and cleaning out. Not normally anything wrong with the caliper.

Are you sure it the noise doesn't vanish when you take your foot off the throttle?

I have the same noise, loudest around 50mph, but it goes away if I take my foot off the throttle. (It's not turbo whistle, cause I've since learned what it is )

Mines does this it makes like a humming noise about 15-20mph the then it goes. I thought it was the bearings but when it went in for a service last month I asked them to check, they said the bearings where ok. So I can only put it down to the tyres making the noise on the 18" wheels.

Yeah its definitely with the speed of the wheels not the throttle. You can almost feel it slightly through the steering wheel

As above, run your hand across your tyre see if there are any groves like a 50p

Yes mate, imagine a 50p, if your alignment is out your lovely round tyres will be all knobbily like, just have a feel, if its your tyres you'll understand

Get the alignment checked too mate.

Mine was the same, swapped the tyres round, had the tracking done and new tyres fitted but noise was still there. Had a 4 wheel alignment done and voila, noise was all but gone.

Seats do suffer from higher than usual road noise from the rear anyway.

Definately tyres. Called Saw Toothing very commen on this "chassis" Golf's, A3's etc all suffer from it.

Run your hand around the rear tyres, one way smooth... the other way rough like the teeth of a saw....

Can try alignment check but the only real cure is tyres without a outer "block" pattern, or non directional tyres that you can swap from side to side.

My K1 has it and i'm just living with it until I can get some new tyres.

Ultimately its just bloody annoying!!

Yeah cheers- the thing is, the two rears are original fronts by Yokohama. So there's no 'block' tread on them at all. The outer edges of them- the tread almost thins to a slick look. Even when brand new. If you know what i mean?

Try jacking it up and spinning the wheels, as above could be brake bind or warped or damaged disc or a wheel bearing.

Tyres mate, mines the same. I had seat look at mine n hed showed me the inside edge of the tyre are like a 50p if u run ur hand over the inner edge u can feel it they stick out. Just live with it

Yup. Otherwise your new tyres will end up just like your old ones.
