I have read a few threads on here that are critical of the tyre pressure monitor that uses the ABS sensors, that is fitted to the Leon. Well last night on a narrow country road I encountered a Range Rover coming in the opposite direction. Being a Range Rover he obviously wanted (and needed) all of the road, so I got forced right over into the verge. I hit something, possibly a rock, which destroyed the sidewall of my NSF tyre. At the time I didn't realise the tyre was damaged, the car still felt fine. About half a mile up the road the tyre pressure monitor flagged up a problem with the NSF tyre. I stopped and checked, sure enough the tyre was going down, it had a tear in the side wall. Had it not been for the monitor I would have been non the wiser, as the car felt no different, it drove just the same. I can only put this down to the 35 profile tyres having very stiff sidewalls.

The upside, the tyre pressure monitor does work.

The downside, I need to replace both front tyres, which is a little annoying as they still had 3mm on them. BUT, I have always been a bit disappointed with the standard fit Bridgestones on my Cupra and being a bit OCD and liking to have four matched tyres, this little episode has cost me £600 for four new Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric 3's!

But if anyone wants a pair of Bridgestones with 5mm of tread on them (ie my two rear tyres), give me a shout......lol

The upside, the tyre pressure monitor does work...

Yes, it does. My wife destroyed a brand new tyre on our last car by driving around town all day on it totally flat. The tyre was literally two-days old. The Leon system would have caught that.

It's not as trustworthy as a proper pressure monitor though. It has no idea what the tyre pressures are, just what the difference between the two wheels on an axe is. If both tyres on an axe drop in pressure at a similar rate the system will not pick it up.

I know this because it happened to me. I got out of the habit of checking the tyres, assuming the monitor would ping if anything was amiss. Then a while later I noticed that both front tyres looked down a bit. When I checked them they were both low.

It's not unusual for tyres to loose a bit of air over time. Something to watch out for.
