I wonder if anyone knows why all available tyre pressure charts (including the sticker inside fuel filler flap) state that my car (2002 1.9 Tdi 110) needs 34 in the front tyres and 45 in the back.
Are you looking at the pressure for the spare? That is normally higher than then the others.
Edit:
I've just checked mine and under normal load front and rear are both 33, with max load (5 people + full boot) front becomes 36 and rear 45, the spare will need to be 45 in case you get a rear puncture while fully loaded.
45 is just simply too much. I have been running 33psi all round as indicated on the sticker, and I am knocking the centres out of all four tyres, so now dropping to 31psi all round to see what that does.

On the subject of tyre pressures anyone got any recommendations for trackday pressure? I'm guessing I should up it a bit all round from standard 33psi?
They are a track biased tyre, but are road legal. These are actually wets from a friend who races in the VW Cup (they were last year's control tyre). They won't last long, but I have put them on for the time being.
And Darth - you want to take a little pressure out, not put more in. On track you will be working the tyre hard and generating more heat, so it will raise the pressure more. Try 29/30 psi (when stone cold) and check them as soon as you come in. If they are getting above 33/34 when hot bleed a little bit of air out at a time.
