Hi all, just curious about what tyre pressures folk are running?
This has come about after seeing a few videos and comments on YouTube favouring higher pressures, the theory being the guidelines on the tyre information plate are too low, so instead of say running 35psi they argue it should be nearer 40psi for better wear, more even and less tyre deformity.
As I say I'm just curious as to what folk run, and if this is just yet more YouTube 'Experts' expounding they're own opinions?😉

I don't know what the handbook recommends as tyre pressures for the Formentor but I imagine they're fairly similar to those of my Ateca VZ, as per door pillar label below;-

Of course the manufacturer will work out the tyre pressures based on a number of factors, not least size and weight of the vehicle, size of the wheel & tyres, fuel consumption desired, suspension settings etc.

The Ateca VZ has 'Standard' and 'Comfort' pressures, with the Comfort being 0.3bar lower.

When I first got an Ateca VZ 4+ years ago, I got into a discussion with a Master Tech at my dealer over tyre pressures and commented that I thought the standard pressures were high; certainly higher by some margin compared to my experience of many years of motoring.

Yes; he replied. Designed to get best fuel consumption for regulatory tests but too high for optimum grip and comfort. He followed that the Comfort pressures were perfectly up to the job, I took his point and I've run them to no ill effect ever since.

Objectively it depends on what your priorities for motoring are. You choose.

Just my two pence worth.

@Doogle - I’m afraid I disagree with the YouTube ‘experts’.

IMHO car manufacturers will want to achieve the most favourable results in official WLTP emissions and fuel consumption tests to avoid paying significant emissions-based fines imposed under EU legislation. With this in mind, car manufactures will opt for higher recommended tyre pressures as higher pressures = lower rolling resistance = lower emissions and fuel consumption. The trade-off of high tyre pressures might be poorer ride quality, grip and heavier tyre wear around the centre section of the tyre tread compared to the outer and inner sections of the tyre tread.

As @Bahnstormer_vRS has said there is sometimes a ‘Comfort’ setting for tyre pressures (my last VW didn’t have a Comfort setting) - the trade off for using the Comfort setting may be slightly worse emissions and mpg figures.

Cheers for the reply, as I say I was just curious seeing a view of these videos popping up and never hearing their theories, personally I just run the settings on the door
