What size of tyres do you have on your car?

I'm needing two new tyres on the front of my 2001 V5 and was searching online using my reg. They all say i should get 205/45/R16.

But just nipped out to check what was on the car and it is 205/55/R16.

What's everyone else got and is this ok?

good stuff, Although interesting that Kwikfit, mytyres and tyre shopper all show the wrong size when i enter my car reg to find tyre size.

Other plus point is there are way more tyres available at 205/55 than there are 205/45.

Personally I don't use those car reg things for anything, my 2001 V5 comes up as a 150bhp one so I get all wrong part numbers. So brake discs are too small, engine parts are for a completely different engine, it can definitely make things entertaining!

My 17 inch wheels use 225/45, but since they came from an FR I'm guessing they came with the stock tyre size and the PO simply maintained that.

I've seen the same nonsense on the likes of Kwik Fit, so I rang SEAT up. They confirmed that 205/55/16 was the factory spec.

Original wheel and tyre fit is something you can find from the option codes on the build sheet. In my case

CG7 - alloy wheels 7J x 16 offset 42

H6U - tires 205/55 R 16 91W

1G2 - steel spare wheel with original equipment tires

Use a decoder such as this one

(Hxx codes are mostly tires, Cxx mostly wheels. 1Gx tells you what spare was supplied)

Or download a full list from here.

Build sheet? Not sure about your car, but mine has had ten years for that to go missing! I'm thankful that I still have the radio code! :D

It should be stuck under the carpet in the boot and also in the front of your service book. You haven't lost the service book, surely?

Here's what my last build sheet looked like. The dot-matrix characters can be a little odd

Incidentally, I'm pretty sure the fourth line, 81 MN0 C5M consists of the engine power in kilowatts, the engine code from the options list (MN0 = 4-cyl. turbo diesel eng. 1.9 L/81 kW TDIEU 3 base engine is T8U) and C5M stands for gearbox, 5-speed, Manual.

Ah, I recognise that pattern of numbers and letters, although I don't know where.

My service book was last stamped about 70,000 miles ago! :)

Hi!

I have some 17's ready to go on my Tolly Mk2 but at the moment Tyre fitted is 205/40.

Apart from the speedo etc am I going to be ok running on these or should I get them changed for the preferred 225/45?

Colin

Those are two 'steps' smaller than the 225/45. Not only is the profile smaller, the width is also smaller which will also reduce the profile. Your car will be running about 12% slower than it reads, and it will already be 10% low. Expect to get people flashing at you for driving too slow! :D

The only thing though is that if 205 is what is fitted on the wheel, it may not be wide enough to accept a 225 tyre.

cheers!

rims are 7.0x17" so i would imagine it would take a 225 wheel??
I'll fit them tomorrow see what it's like for ride speed handling etc if not I have some wheels for sale!
