Hey,
For the past few days ive noticed my 3rd gear making a noise when the engine is 'braking' in the gear, it sounds as if the gear isnt in fully and making a slight grinding type noise, difficult to explain ... the following is true though ...
1. The car drives normal, acceleration normal, gear change normal etc
2. The car pulls and drives fine in 3rd gear
3. The car will also 'engine brake' in 3rd gear but htis is where its noisey
I dont know if Ive explained it properly, but 3rd gear drives normally, accelerates normally, but when I take my foot off the accelerator and the engine is acting as a brake whilst it's in gear then it makes the noise, however as soon as you touch the accelerator, even a tiny tiny touch just to stop the RPM dropping, the noise disappears!!
Now the only connection I can think of, is I hit a dead badger a month or so ago which ripped off and cracked the plastic shielding underneath. Since that though its not shown ny problems or signs of problems except this odd noise thats appeared in the past week.
Im concerned that it may make the car worse? someone did say it may be the linkage to the gearbox is damaged thus meaning it's not going fully into gear, thus the twisting of the engine on engine braking is causing it to make noise, might be complete bs though!!
Any ideas? Im concerned and would like a bit of an idea before I send it to the garage so I don't get fobbed off with some expensive repair.
Cheers
Mike
P.S Car is as per my sig, a 2004 (53 plate) LCR 225 ... had an engine rebuild at 60k due to a cam belt failure, full service history, currently on 95k, 90% of miles since the 30k mark have been dual carraigeway/motorway miles in 5th/6th gear.
