Wife's getting the Leon some new shoes in a sec, but I can see from the website the place only has the XL F1 Eagle A2...not the normal ones.

Does that make sense at all? It's a decent price diff.
 
91? I thought XL was 94...

In any case I've reached "sod it" and just going for whatever F1s are in stock :(
Ordering non-XLs and getting them fitted is 210, having XLs fitted is 240...not worth the effort
 
XL has a rim protector, non-XL doesn't.

XL Has nothing to do with having a rim protector or not. XL stands for "Extra Load" which indicates thicker and/or reinforced side walls on tyres. I have both a Mk1 and Mk2 Leons and they both have "XL" tyres so I can only assume that all Leons should have them?

XL / reinforced is loading index which refers to banding / ply of the tyre.



Run flat the same as xl then or is that next level of strength m

run flat is different technology again. but your on the right lines. you can also get RunFlat XL.

I didn't see the point of XL as one site I read said it was for heavier cars.
They had the non-XLs in so I went for them...

Insurance could be an issue if you had the wrong spec tyre fitted. We all know how insurance companies love to find a way out of paying if you were to put a claim in for any reason.

Not just that, I drove a a mates Leon FR back from the airport once and comapered to mine it felt really odd through the corners. It was only when I parked up and noticed that he didn't have XL tyres fitted when the penny dropped. He changed his tyres and now it handles like it should do.

It's not just the weight of the car that comes in to it, it's also the fairly low-ish profile that you have to take in to account. Keep in mind that our cars are meant to be sporty and at times are expected to be driven like that so the stiffer sidewalls help with handling and keeping the tyres on the wheels.
 
XL tyres have the same load index. a leon is 93 iirc. which is around 660kilo... now an XL tyre will be the exact same load index, but will require more pressure to hold that weight.

the LCR with 19s, which asks for 44psi i think, will be an XL tyre.

its a pressure to weight ratio.
 
92y xl is the manufacturer standard. Anything less will void insurance for sure, anything more may upset the handling.

My FR TDI came out of the factory with 91Y non-XL Pirelli Pzero rossos on.
It's been through 2 more sets since then with no issues.

It's more than likely they all came out of the factory with whatever bargain basement deal Seat could land their hands on that week, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

That does put me at ease a bit.

Also just read (on here) that there is also a diff between 17 and 18s.
If 17s (which I have) then normal 91Y will suffice. If 18 then XL.
No idea if that makes sense
