Are there any 10 valve V5 owners who have had a remap and would like to comment on if they think it was worth it? What did you pay and have you had any problems since? I believe it would add an extra 20 bhp to the existing 150 of the 10 valve. What difference did this make to performance and did it change your driving style - do you still get low down torque and do you take the revs higher to get the performance? Let me know good or bad. If there's not many 10 valve remap owners out there then feel free to comment whatever you drive!

Going to get a quote but want your opinions before I take the plunge.

Cheers

People who have had remaps on 2.0 8v Ibizas etc say that it is still worth it as it makes the car much more driveable and responsive despite only increasing power marginally. I toyed with the idea for 4 years when I had my 8v but never did get round to it. I would avoid Superchips for sure and look at Amd/Stealth if you were going to bother. It's a shame you can't get a free trial.

I'm not sure you'll get 20 BHP extra. I have just lokked at the superchips website and they quote 8 BHP gains.

AMD were quoting an increase of 20 bhp for a Golf V5 - Seat V5 not on their website but wouldn't it be the same?

I would'nt bother if I was you as for the money it will probably cost it's really hardly worth it.

Andy

Fair point, that's why I'm asking really but I thought for just over half the cost of a years insurance (at London prices anyway) it's worth investigating.

Thanks Steve for your comments too. It's not all about power gain but how useable the power is and your friends experiences help confirm that. I came across a discussion here some time ago that while some liked the extra bhp of the later 170 bhp 20 valve others liked the useable power of the 10 valve, even though 0-60 was slower. I wondered to what extent a remap might achieve the best of both worlds?

Hi there,

Any updates on how good your upgrade has been? Did it cost £699+vat?

cheers

Hi Dinoken,

No, the remap was only £350 (it's normally that plus VAT but I had my car serviced by AmD as well so they dropped the price) http://www.amdtechnik.com/products.variant.cfm?variantid=230.

All is still going well nearly two years on. I did have a replacement MAF at one point, but that is such a common fault I don't believe it had anything to do with the remap. It's not the difference between night and day and you won't get the gains a turbo motor can achieve but it does have more oomph and the power is very usable across the rev range. I would say it's worth it. I don't know where you are but AmD have recently been bought out by BBT so I don't know if they offer the remap at their Essex branch or if you still have to go to Bicester like I did. Where did you get the £699 quote? I wouldn't spend that much for a 15-20 bhp gain on a motor that has depreciated so much to be honest. Is that for an exhaust upgrade as well?

I'll dig out the post where I posted up my results and edit this one when I find it.

Edit: Here's my remap results (post 7 shows torque chart, post 18 shows bhp and summary) http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=62537

yeah the 699+vat includes the exhaust (miltek) too.

I think i will just upgrade my suspension and leave it as that.

cheers alot.

Thats sounds like a fair price for a remap plus Miltek exhaust. I'm interested in fitting a zorst ourely for the sound, I dont expect any power gains to speak of.
I've seen postings from peeps on the mk4 Golf forum who have fitted Milteks, but has anyone fitted a Miltek exhaust to a V5 Tolly?

I toyed with the idea of a milltek but never went through with it. I think Saul did did one on his Tolly but that was a 1.8T I think? I believe he had to cut into the rear valance. I believe a Bora one would fit and discrete exit pipes would be an option but if you want bling pipes I think you would need to modify the rear bumper. I've heard them on Golf V5's and they sound absolutely lovely and perhaps give another 5 bhp. Doubt I'm going to go that route myself now, although I drooled over the sound - not a chavvy sound at all (which would have been my worry), just an amplified burble at idle and then a lush sounding roar when accelerating.

I wish you wouldn't keep reminding me of this thread: http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/thread/698378.aspx (scroll down the thread for vids - there's one at idle further on). It always tempts me again.

I've been on the dog to Miltek, very helpful people. They dont have a confirmed fitment for the Tolly but they expect it to be straight forward to use the Bora version. I'm booking my car in with them so they can do the fitting themselves and satisfy themselves the fit is OK, plus carry out any adjustments if necessary. They can do the discrete tail pipes in either a resonated (louder than stock but not excessive) or non resonated (louder still but apparently not excessive) version. Tempted by the resonated version as it should enable me to hear the engine properly but be reasonably quiet for my motorway commute whilst not so loud it nobs off me neighbours.
Are you seriously interested in buying cos if so I could maybe negotiate a special deal for the both of us?

I don't think I am mate. Truth is, a change of job at the end of this month means I may sell within 6 months anyway on grounds of fuel economy. Yours sounds like a good plan though - the refinement on motorways is a big asset of the V5 and I also didn't like the idea of causing net curtains to twitch on start up in the morning. Yet still I would love to have known what it sounded like with a milltek. I'll be really interested to hear how you get on. What price will they do you for? Can't you negotiate a slight discount on the basis that Milltek and the likes of AmD/BBT would then be able to promote the fact that the milltek have a suitable fitment and they might generate more business?

Given I'm unlikely to get much for the Tolly I'll have a tough time deciding whether to get rid. If I don't it might be back on the cards, but not for now. Good luck!
