Which version are you trying to run on Vista?

If you're trying to run 409.1, stop, and instead download VCDS-Lite. I'm sure this will sort your probs.

I tried running 409.1 on Win7 and managed to get it working using Compatibility mode and running as administrator. Not sure if you can do that on Vista.

I'm running 409.1 on Vista laptop here no probs.

Had to allow access of COM3 and 1 I think in device manager somewhere. Took a bit of fiddling, but it will work believe me.

Are you switching your ignition on when opening vagcom?

Also have vagcom light 311.2 and this did the same thing, same message... until I made the com port accessible in device manager.

Have a look in there bud.

With cable connected and car ignition on, go START, then CONTROL PANEL, then DEVICE MANAGER, then near the bottom of this list you should see an icon or something that will have an exclamation mark on it. This means there is a problem with that area, i.e the port isn't enabled to communicate with the car in this case. It's something to do with USB to serial controllers I think.

Right click it and see if you can enable it. I think that's how you do it. But without connecting my laptop to the car right now I can't see the exact item I want in device manager.

Just done a quick google, it brought this up which may help bud:

And you've tried every single com port, COM1 to 6 or whatever vagcom says?

Ignition clicked fully on so you have 4 lights on dash come up. Cable connected properly?

You should see something on your laptop. Device manager should show something. When you 1st hooked up the cable did anything pop up on the bottom right of your laptop in the system tray near where the time is? Like 'installing drivers' etc?

Turn off your antivirus temporarily if it's being over-safe? Another thing to consider. Other than that I'm out of ideas sorry. Unless you can re-install vagcom.

Going back to the CE laptop, is it decent enough to upgrade to 7? Windows 7 doesn't need much to run, it might fit. Then it would work better with the VAGCOM stuff.
