hi all,
the other day i noticed that i had a slight chattering coming from by the cambelt and also my idle rpm had dropped bu bout 25 rpm. so i took the cover off and i think it was coming from the cambelt guide tensioner, i took it to seat and they sed there was nothing wrong, well no when i rev the engine now to like 4500 to 5000 rpm i get this vibrating noise coing from by that tensioner, has any one got any ideas of what it is and what i can do???
any help would be great.
cheers

I guess it's the tensioner ;) How long since the last cam belt change and what is the mileage? Tensioners etc. are replaced when the cam belt get done - should be every 4 years or every 60k miles.

Maybe try another dealer or try and get a 2nd opinion from somewhere. If it is affecting idle revs and vibrating then it clearly is a problem and you don't want the tensioner to fail.

i agree with what kriso is saying, if the tensioner was to break, then this could probablys lead to further damage, and if the belt snaps then ... i think you can guess the rest lol :(

not to sure about the 4cylinder engines mate as mines only a baby 3 potter, so on my engine you have to support it befor you even take the camshaft chain cover off! but on the 4cylinders i dont think you have to do that, i would get a haynes manual and read it up, even if the manual isnt the same car, just look for one that has the same engine :)

maybes the vibration from the engine makes it vibrate when it is running? run your engine, get the longest screw driver you have, and put the metal end against the casing and put the plastic screwdriver hanel against your ear and have a listen and see if you can hear and others noises, the screwdriver trick works just like a stethoscope :)

The first thing I'm going to ask is this:- Does the belt tensioner in question tension a toothed belt or a flat belt with no teeth? The cam belt is flat on one side and toothed on the other.

I'm thinking that you are getting your belts mixed up.

If we are deffo talking about a toothed belt, you are in grave danger of an engine failure. If we are talking about a flat belt then it's your alternator belt tensioner that is the problem and it isn't a big problem.

Alternator belt problems can cause variations on the tickover too as the alternator load affects the tickover speed.

Once we have established the tensioner in question I think you will find that you have a tensioner bearing failure causing the vibration/noise rather than a loose tensioner.

Thanx 4 the replys, its the tensioner on the back of the cambelt, its only a little bearing, it ain't the altonator belt, I'm at a proper loss with this one, I duno wt 2 do cus I no its this but seat won't do any thing, when I took it 2 them I no they didn't listen to it properly cus I watched wt they did, when I told the girl on the desk they were like we have looked at it! I was like such a liar! I no its my luck it will all **** up!
